Rough opening Emerson

Hello,

I have an Emerson CQC-8 (got it in dec) and I have been having problems with the opening of the knife. It's really tough to open, but if I loosen the pivot screw anymore, there is wiggle when the knife is opened. The knife is also very rough when it is opening, a sort of rubbing/grinding feeling.

I opened up the knife and cleaned the washers and contact points and applied lube. At first the problem was solved. It opened 10x smoother, faster and easier, but now it opens smoothly sometimes, but most of the time it is rough like it was before I cleaned it. I was wondering what else I could try to make the knife operate smoothly and consistently? This is my first folding knife so it may be an easy fix that I am overlooking.

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to owning an Emerson. This is exactly why I traded the few off, that I got in trade. If you go to the Emerson guys, they will tell you, "it's not pocket jewelery", and "they were meant to be used, they are hard use knives". Good luck man, I doubt you will fix this problem.

It should smooth out over time. The nylatron washers are self-lubicating, so if you cycle the action on it 300 times or so it will start to get better.

My CQC7 has been opened hundreds of time. Taken apart. Cleaned and run dry. Taken apart, lubed. You name it. It opens great when I loosen the pivot enough to see light between the washers and the blade.Try that! I'm sure you will like it, ha. Self lubricating???? Seriously? Maybe I just need to tighten the pivot enough to squeeze the lube out of the nylatron.

Thanks for the replies. I think it should be past a the break-in stage at this point, as I use this knife every day. I haven't heard of very many issues except fit and finish when I was researching Emerson knives so I am surprised others have had this problem. Other than this issue, I really like the knife, especially the wave feature which I didn't think would be that handy. I dont always have the knife in my pocket and would like to be able to open the standard way. I was looking at the knife and in the closed position the blade is more to one side than the other (there isn't equal space between each side of the liner and the blade). Could this be part of it? I know next to nothing about folding knives. Thanks.

Your blade off center, is not the problem. It's just more Emerson goodness. I would wager a guess, that this knife will not ever be right. If you are having problems like this, send it back to them, and ask that they make it right.
