Rough opening Endura L/W

I posted this over at the Spyderco Forum, no luck yet, so I thought I might try here.

Hi,
I just purchased an '98 Endura Lightweight plain edge. I am very happy with this knife except one point, when opening, the action seems quite rough from about half way onwards. It feels like the back edge of the blade where the locking lever rides on has slight waves in it. Is this normal and will it most likely smooth itself out over time? Or is there something else I can do to make it better. The action is definately always well lubed, I usually use TW-25B.

Thanks for any help,
Fabian

It will probably have to smooth out after the break in. I have the pre 98 model to me they seem to be a bit smoother. I'm waiting for a new Delica to come in from BLKW, hury UPS, Hurrrry!! RKBA!

Seems to be a common problem with the Endura and Delica. My first Delica was OK, the second one was rather tight so I sent it in to get fixed. It came back slightly better, and after a while it got better. Now I have my third Delica, a blue one. It's pretty tight now but I'm going to leave it like that and see how long it takes to wear in. The only thing that seems to make it better is constant usage

Hi Fabian. They should be smooth all the way. Can you see anything on the tang surface? Some break in may be required. If we make them loose when new, when they break in, they are too loose.

Thanks for the advice guys.

Sal,
From close to half way, the knife is smooth (still tightish, but I can put that down to new knife), but from then on, if I am rest my thumb on the lock, I can feel ir rise, fall, and then rise again before locking in place. This translates into a sort of shudder for the last half of the opening.

It is not huge, and my friends tell me I am being pedantic about it, while this is true, I have heard better things about Spydies.

Thanks again.

I put a bunch of toothpaste (not gel) in mine. After letting it dry overnight, I sat there opening it over and over again for an hour or so. Of course it felt really gritty but I knew that it was going to be sweet once I flushed it out and put some lube in there. Sure enough, I thoroughly washed and dried the knife, and even w/out lube I found that I could then easily wrist-flick the blade open. (So now of course I can't carry it since "gravity knives" are illegal in Canada

) Now, once I sprayed a shot of Slick 50 teflon lube in there, watch out! I almost cut my index finger when I released the lock for the first time, since I was not expecting the blade to fall so quickly! Lockup is still 100% even after repeated flicking and drop openings, and it is soooo smoooth. I wouldn't do this to an expensive knife, but then again I don't subject my expensive knives to any of the crap that my Enduras must "endure" on a daily basis!

I thought my Endura 98 was a bit gritty as well at first. After about 6 months of moderate use, I noticed that it was smooth as silk! It just came to me suddenly. I think a little wear in will fix your problem. Best way to accelerate this is remove all lube/oil and then spend an evening opening and closing. After this, the blade aught to be lubed (try Finish Line Teflon or Militec-1). I don't think it is a real problem. It is a great shame that Spyderco can't increase the price enough to give us an ajustable pivot screw. I think this alone on top of the exellent Endura would make for the best Zytel knife made!

Thanks guys,

I will definately try the toothpaste trick!

However, if this does not fix the problem, do you think it is worth trying to send it back to the factory?? (I'm not sure there is too much they could do, short of replacing the knife, and I doubt they would be willing to do that just because of a rough action) Or should I just live with it? I do love the knife in general...

I had a Delica training Drone that was prety rough too. I used a few drops of White Lighting and it made it very smooth...
