Rough Rider Coal miner work knife

It looks attractive and I've been thinking around it... The linerlock is useless (IMHO) and I imagine this cost would be better invested in stainless liners, a stronger backspring or better steel for the blade (just an idea...). Eventually, it has nothing over a Case Sodbuster which may be a tad pricier but is a sure buy if you are into this kind of knife.

It's a good solid worker, razor sharp out of the box 99.9% of the time. It's a big knife, here it is beside athe small Case soddie.

Best regards

Actually, the liner lock is very strong and in regards to cutting (out of the box), the few tests I did using leather RR
did considerably better than Case stainless.

Interesting. Plus you get bone handle, Case is plastic. I have a Case sodbuster. Almost had an accident with it when my hand slipped, I dont know if the jigged bone would be less slippery. I sanded the Case handle slightly after that.

How difficult is the RR to open, can you pinch it partly open and then hook the handle for example behind your leg to open it fully?

i got the red bone version of this rr knife. it's a decent knife for the money, imho. the liner lock is a nice feel safe addition. not needed with proper use, sure.....but i'm a sloppy cutter and that little bit of extra safety stop isn't a problem for me.

heat treat isn't all that bad on mine. took longer than i thought it would to reprofile it, and it keeps a decent working edge as long as i'd expect 440(a)? or chinese mystery stainless steel to keep. i'll buy another when i wear mine out. i like not worrying about breaking my better knives and it fits this bill perfectly. plus i like the somewhat sod buster design...

all that said.....if case made the larger or normal version sodbuster with a lock back.....then my rr red bone liner lock would be retired.

The one I showed is micarta with a glaze, they used to make them with the handle sanded out to the cloth which made for a great grip. The pull in this one is quite strong and can't be pinched, has a very strong backspring. The lock is tight as a drum.

jbmonkey. Acording to Bernard Levine 440a can be heat treated to within 1 rockwell of 440c. I have found the RR heat treat to be excellent.

Of the Chinese made slip joints, Rough Riders have a pretty good reputation especially at their price point. Better than the Frost Cutlery (Chattanooga).
