I'm wondering how Rough Rider's damascus is. I imagine it's not like some of the higher end stuff, but how is it in general? Hold an edge, easy to sharpen...? Anyone have experience with it?

Sorry, no experience with it, but I believe theirs is etched, rather than true Damascus IIRC

Some of it is. I guess I should have clarified, I'm referring to the damascus that is not etched. It says 'Japanese San-mai damascus', which does claim to be layered.

Fyi much damascus is etched to show the layers (the different compositions etch at different rates), not to fake the layers.

San Mai Damascas has a core steel then layered over. here's one with a 0-1 core made by Thomas Haslinger. I'm not sure RR has the same quality going on?

I have one of the gents lock backs, RR 21 I believe with the San mai. Isn't a hard use knife by any means but the steel seems pretty good. Harder than the usual 440/420 and doesn't stain. It's a great little knife.
