I know that RR slip joints have some good reviews and I liked the first one I got so I picked up 2 more. Great knives for the money. I'm wondering though about the quality of their fixed blades. Do they use the same steel? A lot of sources have little to no real info so I am curious. I like pocket sized fixed blades so I am looking NB at a couple the RR-1237 or similar it's 3.25" overall, and one with urban camo that's 4.25" overall. Also if you have a fav RR fixed blade please show us ;)

Don't know what steel they use, but considering the brand's reputation they would no doubt want to uphold, I would be surprised if they used a lesser steel on the fixed blades, or cut corners on anything else.

Say Heah Everybody, Yeah, I finally completed my Wannabe Nessmuk Trio. I got a Beautiful Adventure Sworn Guide Nessmuk Style Knife in 3V with White G-10 Handle and Black Micaeta Liner's. I had a hard time finding a 5" Blade first of all, Then in the 3V, But as soon as I got the e-mail I bought mine. I already had a Beautiful 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet. Mr. Devin Price makes art. He forges the 6160 he uses then machines them for consistancy if your throwing competision. At first l@@k I thought it was a miniture, But believe me it's no toy. It's a vert clise copy to Nessmuk's he has made by Bushnell Optical Co. He had it Custom made and he was a small stature man, I'm a tich over 6". a slight size difference if you get the drift. So for a man my size it looked small. But it's a copy of his. and believe me it's not a toy. It's like a lightweight that punches like a heavyweight. I also bought (2) Rough Rider Moose Patter Sliojoint Pocjet Knives. I got mine in stag, and both came out exactly spot on. The steel might even be a 420, But the tempering is good because mine hold's a decent edge. I even like the fact the blades are the same as the Trapper Knives I have, But on a Moose Pattern. Each blade open's from each side, instead of how my Trapper's open , side by side. Anyhow, That's my. 00.02 worth.,,.

Micarta, and it's 6150 not 6160, a pretty good steel for this kind of implement. Sorry fir the typos, I should have proof read before hand.,,.

Some are made in China, some in Pakistan.

So I'm inclined to think the China ones would use the same steel as the slip joints, possibly making them better than the Pakistan ones???

I think the Chinese slipjoints might be made in a different factory to the Chinese fixed-blades, but the steel seems of similar quality. The only Pakistani-made one I've had was a Bowie, and the steel does not seem to be quite as good.

Yes, RR seems to source knives from different places. Most of their traditionals seem to be from the same place, though I think there are a few exceptions. Their fixed blades are more variable. Some are pretty nice. They did a Loveless style fixed that's very nice. Some are Pakistani. They even did one from El Salvador, I'm guessing from Imacasa.

I suspect the mini neck knives like the RR1237 are from the same factory as the traditional slipjoints.

I just ordered a Coffin Handle Bowie, I'll let you know about the quality when it arrives. It's my first Rough Rider. I know that people like the brand, but I really am not expecting miracles.

I hope you are pleasantly disappointed by an excess of miracles. :)

Which one did you get? One with plain blade or a "commemorative" to Lone Ranger/Tarzan/Washington/Teddy Roosevelt/ Someone else. with the fancy painted(?) blade, (or a decal(?) on the blade?)

Some Pakistani knives are well made. I've had one, a lockback, Bullet brand. It was so good it was stolen :)

Johnny have you got that knife in yet? im super curious about the quality about their fixed blades but because of how stellar their slipjoints tend to be im not expecting them to drop their standards. does anyone else have one they can give some thoughts about?

I bought a RR Coffin Handle Bowie a few weeks ago and returned it. I can't really comment on the steel, but the overall fit and finish was disappointing. There were chips in the micarta handle and the pins were not evenly spaced. Perhaps I'm just too fussy, but overall I'm a big fan of RR knives made in China.

If you're looking for a great fixed blade from them i recommend the one called "Highland Bowie" the thing looks gorgeous and is a stellar knife i just got mine in between this message and my last and im loving it. There's nothing wring with it whatsoever and it came INCREDIBLY sharp out of the box. Only if you want to give them another shot if course :)

Pics? We need PICS!! :D

Sorry this took so long I only check this once or twice a day and I had to figure out how to post pictures on here as well lol. Please excuse the terrible quality. The scales are micarta and they have red liners between them and the tang. I haven't done anything with it yet but when the weather gets nicer I plan to go do some chopping with it.
