I saw this scale pattern a little while ago and was intrigued by it, so I ordered a canoe and Barlow pattern to check it out. As its name suggests, the covers are checkered in the manner typical of gun furniture. Both are a deep brown, with the canoe being a bit lighter. Overall, the checkering is pretty well done, with even spacing and crisp points except at the edges, where the scales were sanded down to be flush with the bolsters. Even at these areas, everything is smooth and even, just not as pointy. The shields are nicely inlaid with no gaps or unevenness, as well. The pins could probably be finished a bit more smoothly, but they're not below average.

Just wanted to share what I thought was an interesting scale pattern.

I think the checkering on these knives look great. Unusual in that I don't see it on other traditionals, but it looks so nice because it is so well executed. Every time I see the RR knives reviewed and pictures of them posted, I am pleasantly surprised at the fit/finish/execution.

I also have a couple of their knives in the Green version. Grippy interesting stuff, scales are a bit thin though but I feel they work well.

I have one in green (stockman) and one in brown (congress). Great little knives. I much prefer the stockman, but probably just a preference in pattern. Love the feel of them

Where did you get this?! They look great and I wouldn't worry about loosing them in the woods. thanks

I have a couple RR with gunstock bone patterns as well. They are quite the looker and they are very well put together, the blades also have a very good "snap" to them. SS steel blades are the only negative IMHO, but at the price they go for, I don't complain.

looks great! I personally think that RR knives are the best way to try out a new pattern- inexpensive and high quality.
eta- bemo (below) that's funny right there, i don't care who ya are :D

Personally I kinda like that they don't offer carbon steel blades, it stops me from buying them in bunches!

Meanwhile, I'd want to trail along behind you, and find 'em.

Thanks for the pictures and write-up, bwperdue. I wouldn't have guessed these look so fine.

What's the name of the color on the Barlow? I first thought it was black or brown, but there's some red peeking through.

P,

They're both the same color, actually.

No, they in't.

Okay, if you say so (or, more to the point, if Rough Rider does).

This enterprise suddenly feels like "ordering" from a gumball machine, but not necessarily in a bad way.

Unless this dropped out the chute instead:

Thanks for the additional information.

OK - they're "supposed" to be the same color. What do I look like, a technical writer? Oh, wait...

Yeah, I saw that little chopper and chuckled to myself.

That reminds me - I need to see if I can get that writing on the back of the main blades to come off...
