I need some advice !! What do you guys and gals know about Rough Rider Knives ? I looked at some on e bay and they are going real cheap !! Are they as bad as the "China" made knockoffs ?? Or do they have some quality to them ?? They are all slipjoints with bone handles ? anybody know what kind of steel is in them ? I guess 440 c or something similar . Thanks for the advice Jack

As far as I can tell, from the few sites I checked that sold them, they ARE "China" made knockoffs. One site had a number of more modern styles, for their same low, low prices  that were obvious clones of better-known brands.

I doubt 440C at those prices. They would be sure to say so if it were. I doubt they're even 440A.

If you need a knife to scrape chewing gum from your shoes, OK, go for them.

I have been selling Rough Riders for a while now and I am very impressed with the quality for the price - 3 knives in particular are worth looking at they being the Stockman, the Trapper and the LinerLock with pick bone handles. They are well put together and are from the 440 range of stainless steel. The Trapper in particular is a nice knife and would stand up to the US brands for the price. The bone is a bonus. But, one word of warning some of the eBay prices I have seen are over-inflated eg the RRP for the Trapper is $7.95 with jigged bone and $5.95 with smooth bone. The Stockman is $6.95.

Well Gang,
I bought 2 Rough Rider knives last nite one for 7 bucks and one for 5 bucks . I guess I will see what I think of them, I read good and bad about them. I have not bought a "cheap" knife in over 20 years, but I bought these just to check them out.
I like slipjoints, even though I dont think they are as popular as they were when I was a kid. Maybe thats why I like em I'm a old fart at heart.
I have been looking at Schrades, just to add a couple of more to my collection, since they "bit the dust" and saw the Rough Riders. They werent something I would normally buy.
I will let you guys know what I think after I play with them a little.
Good Knife Hunting

I'll be honest with you guys, I dont like them. Ive looked at some before while at smoky and I have to say I would not buy one. The F & F is not that bad, but the quality does vary with these. As far as them being 440? probably 440a? But still it comes down to the quality of the steel, and heat treat. Ive seen damascus blades from India that you could drill a hole right through the blade after it had been heat treated!!!
Me, I am just personally sad at all the knockoffs that come from overseas that have hurt the american cutlery business (just look at the recent demise of what use to be one of the largest and longest running large cutlery manufacturers in the world, schrade, and going under on their 100 yr anniversary!). They have really hurt with the one-handed knockoffs. So does it look like they are going to do it with SJ's now? No I think I will not support that junk. I by no means, mean to offend anyone on the matter, but personally I dont like this kind of stuff.

Someone on the other thread said that in 5 years they might (?) give the Japan, taiwan made knives a run for their money? if its going to take that long, surely it would not be worth buying now, or any time soon.

Just my opinion.
