The title / comparison seems at the surface to be a no brainer. However, I am a senior citzen with a limited budget and a passion for collecting knives. I have come to a crossroads. I can use my limited knife budget ($75.00) to purchase one case knive or 3 Rough Rider knives? Any thoughts on the the best road to take?

I have about 20 Case knives and 3 Rough Riders. I've been surprised by the quality of the RR. Overall Case makes higher quality. Get 1 Case. Quality over quantity.

Never had any rough riders, I love the case knives I have but the one gec lockback I have makes me want more and more gec's.
There are plenty of gec's to choose from between $65 and $85.

If ya aint yella of delrin, you might be able to squeeze out a couple of cases from 75 bucks.

I would much rather have one Case than a hand full of RR's, but that's just me.

I would rather have a Case knife as well...BUT, you could buy one or two, maybe even three Case knives under 75.00 if it is one of the workman's knives.

while i like the rough riders, for whatever reason i dont hold them in the same regard as the case knives i have...
If ya shopped around you could get a couple Case yeller handled knives and one rough rider!
maybe a Case Yeller CV Medium Stockman and a CV yeller Sodbuster JR:D
then enough to try a rough rider out!
either way good luck
regards

I agree that you should get a Case or two.

You could probably get 5 Rough Riders for $75 though.

I'd take an American made Case knife anyday.I'm not knocking RR owners,it's just me.

I'd go with Case. I believe that Case will at least hold or gain value over the years to come.

Something to think about if you are planning for your collection to be passed on to offspring or loved ones.

I own a RR, it´s a nice knife. The bonehandles are alright and the steel is not the best, but it could be worse. Nevertheless I like Case. But with such a small bugdet I´d buy a couple of RRs in the shape you´re interessted in. When you find THAT shape you like, I would go and look out for a Case one.

So you have the chance to get a bunch of knives... :D

Kind regards

I have both, and had both worked on. These brands have different strengths, and it depends on what you're looking for.

There is no question that the Case is a much better knife.

The Rough Riders, while not in the same ballpark, are surpringly very good knives.

So...do you want one one high quality knife? Or, are you looking to find out about different shape and size knifes without bankrupting yourself?

Like I said, different pros and cons.

I only have two Rough Riders and was pleasantly surprised by the quality, especially for the price. As others have said, RRs are a good affordable way to try out new patterns. I'd buy more...

I guess it depends on your collection to date and if you're just wanting to add a few more flavours to the mix.

It's hard to say without discussing specific patterns. For example I'd trade 5 or 6 RR's for one Case Backpocket knife. Same for a Case jumbo stockman or Cheetah.
But the Rough Riders are very serviceable knives, I like most of their yellow delrin knives.

I have a few case knives , have tried the XX and I prefer the CV steel. CV steel everytime. Case also have patterns unavailable in RR

If its between SS blades I would go with the RR.

The value of the knives are quiet similiar -just IMO but the percieved value of the Case is greater - its up to you if you value that perception or not.

Is it a really special Case knife you're looking at? Because it should be pretty easy to get both a Case and a Rough Rider for under $75.

My *dream* Case knife is a Gunboat Canoe, for whichever reason runs around 150 dollars. If you do a really good job shopping, I think you could pick up a nice Case knife in the 40-50 dollar range, and then squeeze in a Rough Rider or two.

I can find a Case Medium Stockman for 32 dollars, a Case Mini Copperlock for 35 dollars, a CV Sodbuster for 18, a Trapper for 25, a Canoe for 36...

Considering most Rough riders are in the 5-7 dollar range, you can pick up two Cases AND a Rough Rider.

Boy oh boy... I'm partial to the Canoe blade shape but any of those are killer deals.
