Today I was sitting in my local cigar shop smoking and solving the world's problems with the rest of the guys. The manager told us they got some knives in and brought them out to see. He told us they were Chinese made and inexpensive. They were Rough Rider knives. As we looked at them, I was impressed (keep in mind that I'm not a knife professional). I was impressed by the quality. I thought they were going to be junk, but they were solid knives. When I looked at the price, one had to follow me home. Lock up is solid and this thing is super sharp right out of the box. I'm pretty happy for $15!!!

I’ve got a couple RRs kicking around. They’re very high quality but inexpensive. My favorite is this little swinguard with tobacco bone covers and acorn shield. Cost me all of $12!

Congrats on the new blade.

I have to admit to being pretty impressed for what I paid. My attitude is that if I used it for a year and lose it, I'm only out of $15. I don't abuse my knives and I don't use them for jobs they aren't suited for so I think that it will hold up.

Rough Riders have a dedicated following in the Traditional subforum. Lots of folks appreciate being able to try out different patterns for not much money.

I have read about them over there. They have their distractors (especially when they are compared to a more famous maker). I prefer to let the knife stand on its own rather than do comparisons. When I bought it, I had a Strider AR in my back pocket. I didn't try to compare my new knife to it. It's a good knife and from everything that I see will stand up to what I do with it.

Rough Ryder makes a lot of traditional patterns and does a good job from a fit and finish perspective. The traditionals have "440A" blade steel or its Chinese equivalent hardened to about 55-56 HRC. Not overwhelming, but still quite functional. I believe their modern patterns have the same blade steel.
