Probably a lawyer. Maybe someone threatened lawsuit.

That is interesting.. I've got a Rough Ryder in my collection and its an I instead of Y. Likely some sort of patent or a lawsuit I would guess.

I believe they've always been owned by SMKW.

My first guess is that someone owns a Rough Rider trademark. A cease and desist letter probably followed, and SMKW decided that discretion is the better part of valor.

That might not be exactly it, but everybody who mentioned copyright, trademark or intellectual property is probably on the right trail. Just so nobody says “Rough Ryder rents trucks”.
