Rough unfinished thumb holes on Endura and Delica

I have bought two Spyderco knives, Endura and Delica, this year sold and shipped from Amazon. Both of them have had thumb holes that are rough, and look like they have been drilled out, and have grooves in the thumb hole area. I have already given the Endura away, but I still own the gray Delica. I had to use sand paper inside the holes to get rid of the rough feeling because it was irritating my thumb. The Endura had a sharp splinter on the thumb hole that literally pieced my thumb like a splinter would.

More than one complaint about this rough finishing on the thumb hole. Look at the customer images of the rough and grooved thumb holes. https://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Del...id=1483209354&sr=8-1&keywords=spyderco+delica

Are these fakes that I am buying? I have been buying Spyderco knives for a long time now, and this is the first time that I have seen sloppy machine work. Every time I pick up my Delica all I think about is that rough finish thumb hole.

These aren't fakes you or I are buying, just poor Q/C coming out of Spyderco. I can say this with certainty as I received a Spyderco K2 from Amazon as well as a Spyderco Matriarch from another authorized dealer and both had very rough round hole openings. They were exactly as you described, with very sharp edges. I used a large ceramic knife steel to smooth out the opening.

I don't complain much, and obviously not that hard to please because I did keep the Endura and Delica with rough thumb holes. On the other hand, I want to buy another Spyderco knife, and this rough thumb hole problem has me second guessing a purchase. A person just wrote a bad review on the Delica because of a rough thumb hole, so I reckon this is an on going problem that has not been resolved.

I've had a few Spydercos with simmilar holes. Mine were mostly sharp around the rim around the edge of the hole. I also just grinded it smooth but it was annoying. I don't remember which Soydercos it was on.

Some of my new ZDP189 and HAP40 have sharp edges on blade hole.
A few minutes with a round diamond file and Spyderco round ceramic file smooth it out nicely.

Would rather have sharp edge and modify to my personal preference than radius which may be slippery for thumb engagement.

FK

Yes I understand that not having a slippery thumb hole is better for user. If you look at the Amazon customer thumb hole pictures, there are grooves left over from machining. Are the grooves there for thumb retention, or is it just sloppy machine work? Over the years buying Spyderco knives, I have never had problems with the thumb holes being slippery on completely finished thumb holes. There is no excuse for this sloppy machine work in my opinion.

I have 2 Delicas that have the threaded look on the inside of the thumbhole. However none of my H1 knives have it. Could it be that it only occurs with certain steels?

I've had some Delicas with the swirled machine marks inside the hole and some without. It's only a $65 knife, so I'm not really surprised. It's never affected the function of the knife for me. I appreciate the sharp thumb hole.

I sent a Szabo DLC in to Spyderco because it opened very stiff and then Spydie hole was sharp enough to hurt my thumb. So much I didn't open it one handed. I couldn't sand it without removing the coating.
Anyways they told me they couldn't do anything on their end without damaging the finish either. I was given the option to exchange for something in the catalog. At MSRP of course.

It's been well discussed here. The holes have a 90 degree angle and a square corner for traction. That doesn't agree with everyone though, some folks like a softer touch.

Same goes for visible marks or lines inside the hole. On mine it's most prominent on the laminate steels which makes sense.

For backlocks (i.e. delica, endura, etc.) I prefer a somewhat sharper/rougher thumb hole, just so the blade doesn't slip and close on your fingers. Once you break the detent on other lock types, you don't run the same risk as opening a backlock, since backlocks will slam closed on you until opened about half way.

I need them sharp/rough for a better purchase. While Im not sure that I have experienced what OP has, surely I would have by now since I own Delicas and Enduras in multiples over the years and I never thought anything was wrong with the hole.

This. Mostly a feature, not a bug, don't blame those that dislike it, though, and it definitely shouldn't ship with splinters or burrs. That could slice a thumb wide open.

I honestly like the sharp edge, but I also typically flick with my thumbnail.

Oh for sure not going there to say one user group is wrong. Can't help but going back to the OP saying these blades came from Amazon in unsatisfactory condition. Alarm bells are ringing.

This is true for most of the Seki City Spydies in my experience. My thumbs are made of elephant hide at this point so it never bothered me, but it's nothing a couple minutes with some emery cloth couldn't fix.

I'd leave it alone though. Adds great traction both with and without gloves, whereas I've had gloves slip on some of the other models. Particularly those with the smaller holes.
