Round Blade tip on Sharpmaker 204

Dear friends,

Have bought a Sharpmaker to try my skills and to put some good edges
on my dull kitchen knives.

The fact is, after practicing with the kitchen knives, I tried the
sharpener on my folder and ended up with a round tip on the edge.

Is there any way to repair it now ?

Thanks in advance,

Roberto.

Don't know what to tell you. The link works for me, either by clicking on it or by copying it into the address line in the browser.

If you draw the knife back toward yourself faster it will not happen. It needs a snappy movement in a straight line backward. Slow movement allows for it to drag across the flat of the stone. You could try doing it fast, that sometimes will repair the tip if its not too rounded already. You need to move the knife downward and backward briskly. Very briskly. I use some magic marker on the tip to make sure I am not hitting it. I have rounded a tip too at first, but figured out the way to do it, without the tip hitting. Its all in the technique.

It sounds like you're pulling until the tip comes off the stones. If so, that will definitely round the tip. If you're using the corners, maybe the faster strokes might help.

Personally, I never use the edges on the tips of my blades. This is to specifically avoid rounding them. I generally use just the flats. It takes longer, but as long as you leave the tip on the stone, you will get a nice pointy end.

On the downstrokes, just be careful to stop the stroke before the tip goes off of the stone.

It might take a little while, but you can fix your rounded tips this way.

Good luck.

As mentioned in the "Customer satsfaction" thread...I have two knives into the W&R shop right now - for retipping service. I decided I could not fix these two myself, after sharpening the tips away on the sharpmaker.

If you use the correct motion and speed, you can use the corners without rounding your tip. In fact they will sharpen the knife right out to the tip of the tip, without ever touching it. But you need a brisk, snappy motion. Hard to get with knives in the 9 inch range but possible. Easy if they are under 5 inches. Most people go too slow and drag it across the flat when using the corner.
Its just too hard to reprofile without using the corners. And if you use them at all with the wrong technique, you will round the tip. I hardly ever sharpen with anything but the corners of the dark and then the white stones. If you use a gentle touch with the white stone corners, it leaves the blade hair flinging sharp and its much easier to get all the way out to the tip properly and evenly than using the flats IMHO. Blade shapes often make you move the handle of the knife outward as the knife moves across the stone when using the flats, otherwise it the blade does not make full contact.

Mike990,

I am going to try this. My friends Rookie already has had it's sharp tip completely removed, so we can practice on it.

Just to let you all know, as I mentioned in the "Customer satisfaction" thread, I received my two knives back from the W&R centre yesterday, and I am most pleased with the work done.

Both knives have had their original "Needle point" restored, and are extremely sharp, shaving easily.

Good work guys, and if I manage to mess up any more I know where to send em' now! They generally charge $10 per knife for this service, but did two for $15 because both were shipped together and return shipping cost provided by them is part of the price.

Cheers, Jeff/1911.
