Has anyone used round metal wedges? Are they superior to flat metal wedges? Details, etc.?

Thanks for the reply from a "newbie".

yes... if by "round" you mean sort of diamond shaped, tapering down<< they are much better. the "grenade" models.. ive split rather large pieces of wood, requiring more than 1 wedge and ive found grenade ones work much better/require fewer.. i started with the flatter wedges. probly had 5 or more of those stuck in the same log. i dont remember ever needing more than 2 grenade ones and my maul.. and im talking BIG pieces, you wont need more than one for most normal size stuff (12-18 inches.. 24 maybe)

I'm sorry, but I see that I should have been more clear. I was not thinking about splittig wedges, but I see how what I wrote could have been interpreted as that. BTW --- good advice about splitting wedges. I'll keep that in mind.

What I was meaning was the round metal wedges used to secure an axe, maul, hammer, etc., head. They are not near as popular as the "regular" metal wedges and I was wondering if they were an improvement or just a different style? Also was wondering if when installing a new handle and the wooden wedge seems to tighten the head up OK, is an additional metal wedge needed? I guess it is obvious that I have never changed out a handle before. I have an 8 lb. sledge hammer head that I need to install a handle on. Got the old one out already. It has an eye size of 1"x1.25". Any advise would be appreciated. THANKS!

ooohhh. well. no idea bout that one, lolz. i always use the straight wedges for handles, never tried the others.. always pound in the metal wedge after the wood wedge.
one trick though=put the head on by hand, snug enough that you can turn it upside down (bottom of handle in your hand/hammer head facing floor) and then tap firmy on the bottom of the handle, in your hand, with a mini sledge or similar=the head will "walk right up the handle" , nice n tight.

I would suggest no metal wedges on axes, but you can use them on hammers and sledges for sure in order to ensure a good tight non slip fit. I have to re handle my 2 lb hammer which I use and abuse, and will use some sort of metal wedge with it.

the only metal i have installed was on my 8 lb sledge with a 30'' handle. my axes never need them
