I've been thinking of roundingor chamfering the spine on one of my folders. Is there any functional benefits or is it purely cosmetic. I wouldn't round the entire spine just from tip to start of thumb ramp.

Depending on how you grip and use your knife you may gain or lose some comfort or feature by doing so. Generally if you place your thumb on the spine or such modifying the spine should improve comfort when using the knife. The other thing is for one who camps and has a fire starter if it isn't a kit or lost the striker a more angular spine makes for a better replacement striker.

I am not a knife maker but I do know this.
Square edges are always a potential fracture point in metals. The sharper, more square that edge is the more prone to failure it gets.
I am basically a glorified mechanic, and job number one in any performance build is to "relieve" all of those sharp edges.
Now in a folding knife the concept is similar to throwing a penny off the empire state building.
Will any real damage happen if you don't chamfer? Doubt it!
Will you gain any real strength? Penny off the Empire state...

Cosmetic? Comfort? Absolutely.

I've rounded the spine on a few knives. For me its personal preference. I don't like feeling sharp edges/corners when I reach in my pocket, but that's just me. I think a lot of it is my pocket knife is my fidget toy.

Rounding the spine and other sharp angles and edges can really change the feel of a knife in your hand. I have a WallyWorld Buck (made in China) trapper that looked and felt blocky. Not only did the spines get rounded, but the bolsters and scales got reworked. Feels totally different and makes a great EDC.

I prefer a hard or a chamfered spine which can serve as a secondary edge to preserve the primary for duties such as scraping.
