I'd like to modify a 4lb hammer I have into a slightly lighter 3.5 lb rounding hammer.
I'm thinking to try out the rounding hammer and see how it works for me.

How do I go about doing this?
Grind the face with belts like a knife and then progress to finer grits to remove the scratches.?
And then polish the face with green compound?

thanks

its easy, you grind away everything that is not a rounding hammer :jerkit:

i made ne out of a large ball peen that had damaged/chipped edges. Its rather easy you just grind it on the belt grinder till you get the roundness on the face you want. I don't know why it needs to be polished. I just gave it a good finish with a gator belt and hit it with a scotch bright wheel.
I have not used it much and the one time i did i put it down and used my normal hammer because i felt out of control with it. just seamed to move metal all around even when i wanted it to only go one direction.

Are you modifying a drilling or sledge hammer? I would imagine that if you keep it cool you could grind the faces down equally flat until it's your desire weight and then round one side rounded. Another idea I have would be to grind grooves that would normally be fullered in to reduce weight.

Its alot of work, but you could do it. I modified hammers on a lathe before. Remember belts, electricity & time cost money. You might be better off just buying one.
Btw, I dont mean buying one of the 'Boutique' hand made hammers either.

As far as polishing green compound.
Do you plan to us it as a convex mirror for your car ?
Polish is impressive but pointless if you actually use the hammer forging. Hot scale is quite abrasive, a mirror finish wont last long.

Well here's what I came up with so will give it a try later
