Rounding the butt of a bone-handled GEC 15 barehead?

I have seen some discussion on sanding the heads of the bareheaded Boy's knives but it's always the ebony versions. I've done this with wood several times, but never messed with dyed jigged bone.

Does anyone have experience with taking a decent amount off of bone-handled knives? I'd like to go pretty round on the head: but I'm concerned about discoloration and buffing it back to match in.

Has anyone sanded dyed bone at all? Can I buff it back on a wheel without any strange things happening?

Dye seldom penetrates all the way through bone scales so look at the end to see if the dye goes all the way through to the liners, that should give you an idea of how much you can take off and where to stop sanding.
Final sand up to 1200-2000 grit then you won't need to buff it.
Buffing shouldn't hurt though, just go light.
