i was wondering how you guys would go about rounding out the spine of a blade (i know a guy did the manix 2 if i remember right) without a belt grinder? would doing a technique along the same lines as the convex with the mouse pad? or sit down with a variety of sandpapers and have at it?

thank you,
nick

I did the spines of several knives by carefully chamfering the corners with a bench grinder, then refined the shape by hand with diamond paddles, working through the grits. Emery cloth would work, too. I finished with a felt buff in a Dremel tool, charged with CrO2 compound. Be sure to tape the edge to avoid accidental lacerations while you work.

If you have a vice clamp the blade and use sandpaper cut into 11" strips 1" wide. Just sand by holding each end and pulling down alternating sides to round off the spine. Get good paper, hardened steel is tough stuff.

ductape the back of your sandpaper strips to make em more effective / help to curb the tearing that is sure to occur.

Might even be able to get by with some cheaper paper this way too.

the vise idea makes sense. thanks, i'll probably try first on a cheap one i have. maybe post some pictures of it.

Dude, that's a great idea. Why didn't I think of that???

I didn't think of it either (most likely read the tip on here at some point)

It sure works good though.

I've only done one knife with a partially rounded spine, and I did it the hard way, resting the spine in the palm of my hand with sand paper, I'm loving the duct tape + sandpaper idea.

Thanks Sparljo!
