I just got a sharpmaker and sharpened a few swiss army knives, and i noticed i rounded a few tips. What causes this and how do i stop doing this? Has anyone ever heard of someone doing this on a sharpmaker?

Read the hatamoto fuck up thread i just made. i got a spyderco sharpmaker today and used it to take a knick out of my cold steel hatamoto and then sharpen it.

the knicks out but the blades dull as dull can be. i just spoke to cold steel to find out that they sharpen at least all theyre san mai blades at a 23-25 degree angle not the 40 or 30 the spyderco gives you. i used the 40, got the nick out and am now looking for advice as to where in the uk(wales hopefully) i can send it.

the 30 to 40 degree setups on the sharpmaker are total angles, as in the angle between the V of the rods. the thirty degree angle gives a 15 degree edge bevel on the blade, and the 40 degree gives a 20 degree edge IIRC.

The rounded tips resulting from the sharpmaker are from the tips rolling off the edge of the rod as you draw the knife towards you and downwards. go a little slower and try to avoid letting the blade slip off the stone at the end of each stroke.

ive noticed i sometimes accidentally ding the tips into the rods, they blunt immidiately from this.

dan. give it a 1000 or so swipes on each side at 30 and then 50 or so at 40. the sm is not the best for stockremoval, it takes quite some time

One other thing you might try is to start with the tip of the blade at the top of the rod and hone down to the heel (the reverse of how they show you to do it.)
