I'm trying to use my router to cut a slot in some G-10 handle material and it seem to get glowing hot! I've tried bumping on/off trigger to keep the RPM's down which helped some. Would a carbide bit work better than my HSS bit does? Has anyone done this? DK

Pretty nice,huh?

having made surfboards for over 20 years... i know a little something about fiberglass, so if you want to router g10 your best bet is a carbide BURR, your can get straight ones like router bits or a diamond abrasive bit....they have them at travers tool...quarter and one eight inch only...you will also have to clean up the fuzz around the hole a little...

You can also use a router speed reducer.
I think it would be alot better than bumping
the switch on and off.
You can find them in most woodworking catalogs.

but you still need carbide or diamonds... the stuff sparks when i grind it!!!!! i stopped cutting it on my wood bandsaw cause my blades would dull so fast...use my metal one to cut it now....it probably dulls your hss router bit in about 3 seconds...thats the reason it gets so hot.....

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you
wouldn't need carbide bits when using the
speed reducer. It will make your carbide
bits last longer if you run them at a slower
speed.
