I just purchased a Roy Helton folder with stag scales from a well known internet knife site and am trying to find some info on the maker and the knife as there is little info concerning him on the internet. Specifically, can anyone give me a ballpark figure of how many knives he has produced and from what years he was active? I am also trying to date the knife. On the blade it has the following markings: R. E. Helton, Maker, San Diego, CA on three separate lines with a small lion to the left of the inscription. Only about a third of the knives that I have seen have the lion engraving next to the name. Would this indicate one of his later knives? Finally, the scales are two different colors with the clip side having a distinctly reddish hue compared to the other scale. I am wondering if this was intentional by Helton or perhaps done later by an owner in an attempt to achieve a burnt stag look to the scale. It doesn't appear to be a replacement scale as it is finished to the same standards as the other scale. I don't find the difference unattractive only a bit odd as I am used to custom makers more often than not matching the scales. Pictures are still available via the sellers site-Arizona Custom Knives.

Thanks,

The color difference is pretty weird. Never seen anything like it. Stag is unique, so slabs not matching is not unusual. Some knifemakers like to put smoother stag on one side or the other. However, with this knife it kind of looks like someone with red pants carried it and the pants got wet with the color seeping into the clip side of the knife.

Brownshoe,
Any idea about the blade markings or build timeframe? If the scale is tinted by some paint or solution inadvertently, would their be some way of removing it without damaging the scale?
