Yes, I imagine it would be pretty slow in the riposte and parry department, but then that's not really what the cutlass was designed for.
Remember, the basic purpose of the blade was as a heavy hack and slash weapon for poorly (or not at all) trained swordsmen.
It was the tool of mayhem for boarding parties and was never intended as something for serious duels or fighting.(Although a Cutlass duel might be an incredible thing to see.)
Basically, it was a very specialized tool for a very specific use and it excelled in it's own small niche'. While I don't own one, I've handled one and it seems to be a very good representation of it's type. It's solid, it's heavy, and it's sharp. Swings like a freakin' MONSTER too, just don't miss what you're swinging at, you'll dislocate your shoulder!
