I have a 15" AK by the Kami RR that I haven't used much and am going to get it out and test it a little. I can't remember or find much on the Kami with the RR mark (also has the mark that looks like a swastika). Can anyone give some opinions. Strengths, weakness. Any problems with blade hardness, edge folding or improper hardening or soft sweet spot, holds good edge? Appears to be dead on spec. Plan on etching soon to look for the temper line. Tried searching but it won't just take RR.

My ( RR ) Amtraks all seem to be well made, nicely fitted and finished. Looking forward to your test results.
BTW, it isn't a swastika.

Got a Chitlangi handled "Balance" khukuri (don't see those often) by Raju, that is one sweet piece of work. Also have a wickedly fast 20" Sirupati by him that Jerry Peasley (Pappy) would have flat out fallen in love with. "Amtrak" as he's called, definitely makes some nice khuks.

Sarge

Swastika, Fylfot, Tetraskellion, all names for the same design, and the most notable of sacred symbols used perversely by the Nazi party. Even Norse runes were fair game to them. Still, considering the symbol is prominent among Hindus and Buddhists, I can only imagine Raju choosing it for his maker's mark was a matter of reverence.

Guess maybe I should have used another descriptive word. I know that as used by the Kami's it has nothing to do with the tradional conotation of Nazi's. Was in a rush to get out and fight the Christmas crowd and it just slipped out. It does make for an awkward symbol though to carry stamped on a blade around here. Without explaination, to most anyone in the States, it always reminds one of one thing.....Unfortunate.:(

IIRC, the swastika was actually a mirror image of the original symbol -- the little bends go in opposite directions.

The sign of the "Twirling Timbers" had the tails going in either direction. There's a Navajo/Dine' rug at the WoolARoc Museum up near Bartlesville Oklahoma that has the Twirling Timbers going both ways.
The Twirling Timbers symbol was a sign meaning eternity among other things.
I don't recall which year and the tribes but I'm pretty sure it included the Navajo/Dine' and the Hopi and another tribe I can't recall without looking it up that gave up the symbol because it had been desecrated by the nazi party. I'm thinking it was in 1939 or so and it was to never be used by these tribes again.
I'm glad to see the Buddhists and the Hindus still using it in the manner it was intended for.

I thought I'd go read some more on this, but a Google search for "twirling timbers" turned up zero hits. :( They weren't kidding about the never part I guess...

"In protest of Nazi Germany's aggression in Europe, the Apache along with the Navajo, Papago and Hopi, banned the swastika, an ancient native symbol, from their blanket and basket designs. Apache Miguel Flores and Hopi Fred Kabotie signed the document proclaiming the ban in February 1940."

I thought it was earlier than this and that the ban took place in '39 according to my Time/Life books that shows a picture of the tribes signing the document. I also thought it was only three tribes. I'll have to dig it out again one of these days. My memory sure ain't what it used to be. :grumpy:

When I saw RR Kami's mark I googled it and fournd MUCHO 411 on it. Unfortunately as with all symbology there are lots of meaning. The one that pleased ME the most was "good fortune." That's good enough for me. I'm not cought up on the PC movement, and if/when I insult people I have little remorse. People insult people all the time. I'll apologize, but if you can't get over it then FU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PC sucks!

Sassas there's no wonder you didn't get any returns on the "Twirling Timbers." That's one of the ndn names for the symbol and not in common use, sorry for any confusion.;)

Here is some more info on the Twirling Timbers and in the article it is called the Twirling Logs.

I had a great post all planned out describing the differences between and history of the swastika (hakenkreuz) and sauwastika, but all the relevant info is on Wikipedia:

Swastika;

Sauwastika.

It's a swastika Amtrack uses on his blades, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the Nazis.

Jeremy

PS- some great links in the above posts.

Solid khukuri's. Excellent hardening. I don't like his edges though. I think I have had 2 or 3 by him and I have had to work on them for several days before they suited me. Not so with Bura, Sher, or Kumar. On the other hand you probably won't get any rolled edges cause they are well hardened.

I haven't gotten a chance to chop much with it but it came sharp and maintained it. However, when I did a vineger etch I really didn't see a temper line like with my other Khuks. Don't know what that indicates.
Ps. What is it that you don't like about his edges. I didn't really see a difference between his and all of the others except for the temper line not showing up.
