Also posted this in the Knife Reviews and Testing forum...but thought I'd have more luck here...

Looking for anyone who has handled (opr better yet USED..) a R.J. Martin Rampage. Seems to be a very well designed self-defense/tactical mid-size blade with a lot of aesthetic value. Can it qualify as a heavy duty user or is it just for show? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

Anything made by RJ Martin is NOT "just for show"...you can safely consider the Rampage as a heavy duty user! RJ's knives are built like a tank and as sharp as a lightsabre (in fact, I believe RJ is the one who coined the phrase "scary sharp").

Some people have referred to the Rampage as RJ's most ergonomic design...I have handled the Rampage and I actually prefer the feel of his cord-wraps (I have a Kwaiken on order :) )...my personal preferences aside, I don't think you could go wrong with the Rampage (or anything else made by RJ).

Thanks for the input! Having handled the beast, what are your impressions of its somewhat 'unusual' blade design. It looks to be a decent cutter, with a strong functional point, but the sort of 'two-stage' primary edge has me wondering if it will make long smooth cuts without a sort of 'bump' or 'jump' in the motion. Any observations on this? Again, thanks for the help.

Again, I'm sure it's more than a "decent" cutter ;)

It's difficult to answer your question though as I have not cut with it...I would imagine that those things would not be an issue when using the knife for it's intended purpose (i.e. a fighting knife)...looks like it would do some nasty damage!

I handled it at one of the NY shows. It's not possible to beat the ergonomics of the handle. I've got a chisel ground Kozuka that's rediculously sharp and useful so I'd put this in that category as well.

You should consider your thoughts on what you are going to cut with it and perhaps contact the maker. If he establishes that it's not the blade shape for your needs, maybe he can provide one that will and also have the well-made handle of the Rampage.

you can also consider the manta ray, although it's double ground. also the quest (I think there's one for sale on the forums) - nice recurve, CPM420V and at the same price as the rampage....

His pieces may be suitable for display but, they are definitely capable of serious use.

Just because people don't write his knives up like a Busse, Mad Dog or, Strider doesn't mean his knives won't perform like them (within reason of course given the designs ;)).

I've been buying knives from RJ from way back before he got press and let me say that all of his knives are designed for serious use! His blades are the sharpest in the bsiness! Whether cord wrapped or micarta, his handles fit great in the hand and don't twist or move when working with the blades. In short his craftmanship is First Class.

Excellent using blades, i own a number of RJ's blades and carry one on me often.

I own one of RJ's knives; the Quest, from Will York. It's one of the sharpest knives I've owned so far. I use it when I do chores and when I cook. Cuts chicken ribs like a hot knife slicing butter. Scary sharp ! It will handle hard work (garden work) as well as delicate work (cooking). The blade/handle are still in perfect condition with no scratches or nothing. If you want sharp and tough, get RJ's knives. Handle is extremely comfortable. Loving mine !
