I was watching the E2E video review of the MK2 and at the tabletop review, he said it was a plastic insert sleeve. I could have SWORN I saw somewhere that it was kydex. Was the first run kydex, or did it start out that way and get changed to keep costs down? If no kydex...bummer. I'm hoping I'll be able to retrofit it somehow. But then, I tried everything short of explosives to get the insert out of my stock BK9 sheath and it wasn't happening.

People in the knife industry just keep calling generic plastics "kydex" as soon it has to do with sheaths and such. Kinda bothers me, but then again whatcha gonna do about it? Fact of the matter is, almost no knife comes with a real kydex sheath, apart from real high-end ones and a few things like the ESEE Junglas.

i've got a tops xcest alpha with a plastic insert. wasn't advertised as kydex but wish it held the blade more securely. haven't tried taking it out but have thought about if it would be feasible to replace it with a kydex b/c the rest of the sheath system is great. lemme know if you have any luck with the bk9 and/or tips if you get it done. anyone have any thoughts in general how to make tighten up the fit in sheats with this design?

I had plenty of luck with the BK9...I threw the stock sheath in the trash and got a Nick Payton special.

Yeah, the name 'Kydex' is a trademark name but these days it's used wrongly to describe all things plastic. There's only one sort of Kydex in reality. Can be ordered in sheets & 'bent' into what ever you like.
They're based in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

Thanks for your interest.

Don't believe everything you see/read on the Internet. Also, don't take everything literally or read more into them than is there. ;) Beyond that, "plastic" can be both good and bad, depending. The handles are "plastic. Darn tough stuff that plastic.

Kydex is a plastic. So, technically, Adam was correct.

Bottom line, the insert is Kydex. "Plastic," used pejoratively so to speak, would have been cheaper, believe me.

You might want to review the information at: http://www.dougritter.com/dr_rsk_mk2.htm

Which includes this tidbit: "What you get is a sturdy black ballistic nylon sheath with a heat molded ambidextrous Kydex insert and a storage pocket on the front."

You will find an image of the insert here: http://www.dougritter.com/pp/pic3019.htm#insert

Hope this answers your question.
