I would like to get a larger blade that would function as a camp knife.

I have been looking at the Ontario RTAK line, which would fit into the budget (less than $100). Its 1095 steel, but not sure how it would stand up to camp use. HAs anyone had experience with this knife under camp conditions?

My concerns are that it's not stainless, and the blade steel. I know 1095 is used quite often, but does it stand up to abuse, like batoning and chopping?

I Also have a question on sheaths. Not just for this knife, but another I have on the way. Leather or Kydex? What are the pros and cons of both?

high carbon steel should take alot more abuse than stainless ... the rtak should treat you fine ... i have a tak 1 its a great knife easy to keep an edge on comfortable in the hand i love it

1095 is a very good carbon steel. It will take hard use as well or better than more expensive fancy stainless steels. It will also hold and edge and sharpen easily.

I've several Ontario RAT knives, and my experience with them has been very positive so far. I took the black coating off mine since I preffer shiny blades, and convexed the edges.
