I sympathize greatly with Jeff Randall and his associates at RAT, and fully support RAT Cutlery. I love my RAT3 and am eagerly anticipating the RC6.

That being said, recently a friend has offered me the sale of his new RTAK II for a pretty fair price, and I'm considering buying it. For about a hundred bucks, how's the price, and should I go for it (all politics aside)??

Thanks for all the help, and God bless.

KATN,

Wade

100 bucks is what a new one would cost, give or take. It is an excellent knife for the money. If it feels good in your hand, try talking him down 10 bucks! If you are looking for a reasonably priced 10 inch blade, you would have a hard time turning down the RTAK II.

What i like about mine is the looks and it does everything I ask of it albeit holding an edge. It doesn't get completely dull by any means but I do run a fairly thin edge on it and it does roll a bit. That could be my doing though and the fact that im used to different steels. If you can get a DogFather I'd go that route instead for near the same price other than that I'd say get it.

Decent weight, great handle, awesome coating and it chops very well for its weight. Heres Noss' Outdoor use vid's and his Destruction as well. I gave you those so you can see them in action and get a better look at it as well.

100 bucks seems steep. I'd wait for one to come around on the secondary market. I had one that I sold for 60.00.

Honestly, you're better off with a cheap machete. I like the RTAK II, but the handle is NOT comfortable and the weight just doesn't seem right for chopping. It's light and really isn't all that effective overall.

Let me say that my evaluation of the RTAK II is in comparison to a Busse FFBM. That mother was in a WHOLE different league in terms of chopping than the RTAK II. It probably ruined my opinion of the latter.

Good luck!

Yeah at first I typed up a similar response as I'm used to using the Fehrman EJ or the CFBM as my main choppers. BUT I have been using the RTAK 2 more (light camping) for branches or firewood and w/o thinking of the latter it does fine. It batons very well, cuts "knife" sized branches or timber pretty darn well. In comparison to FFBM/EJ lol well..there is no comparison but it does get the job done just not as fast as the other 2.

I just picked up an older Ontario RAT RTAK II and a RAT-3 combo, in the sales forum, for $120. These were both USED but in good condition.

The RTAK II is a big blade. I have a couple of uses for it but I doubt I'd buy another knife that big. The handle and feel are fine. The blade holds an edge well enough.

See if your buddy will take less. :D
