I’ve been thinking a lot about what one large knife I’d bring to the wilderness if this summer allows. In the past I’ve always kept a hatchet on my belt and a folding saw, but if I’m not building a shelter they aren't really essential gear (as some would say of a large knife) though light tomahawks can be a lot of fun in throwing. Of all the big knives I can think of the most versatile seems to me to be the rtak2. It can do anything any of the larger blades can do except pry, and since it weighs little and has nice balance I can carry it for hours without fatigue. I’ve really begun collecting big knives lately, so it’ll be hard not to bring along another (or 2) but keep them in a pack. Thru hiking and temporary trails don’t require a thick, heavier blade(where the rtak2 can function like a machete) and neither does preparing enough wood for a fire.
It’s very concealable if slung across the back in a pancake style kydex sheath with a retention loop. I could walk 20 miles with a group and unless I used it nobody would notice. Since I don’t wear a large pack accessibility isn’t much of a problem either.
I’ll bring a nice little skinner like the limited rat3 (in D2 with walnut handle and great leather sheath), a fixed buck open season small game in s30v, a tak1 mod, a few spyderco folders and a LM and SAK. And a red/green diafold for the small blades and folders. The rtak2 can be easily maintained on a water stone.
