Conduct a sharpness test of your knife.
Given 1 knife of choice and 1 regular office issue rubber band (1/8" wide by 3 1/2" long when measured in it's fully closed, but unstretched state). Hold the knife with the edge facing you. Place the rubber band so that it rests on the spine of the knife (this test cannot be conducted with double-edged blades). Stretch the rubber band 1 foot away from the edge and then let go. See if the rubber band gets cut in half.

Tried it just now with my Calypso Jr. Lightweight. No problem.

Next level: how far does the rubber band fly past the knife?

I wonder how dull a knife has to be in order to not pass this test. Any idea how this test would relate to the shaving test? I tried it on my BM 710 and had to go looking for the rubber band. Fun test though.

(running out of rubber bands) I'm not sure how this would relate to the shaving test. I noticed that if a knife won't shave, it won't pass this test either. Now I gotta measure how far the rubber band travels, Uncle Bill.

Not a bad test. I just now used my Ken Onion Ricochet by Kershaw. No problems in the cut---EXCEPT--the Ricochet cut the rubber band TWICE--once when the initial elasticity of the band returned to original form and was sliced by the blade, but ONCE AGAIN for the second cut when the loose ends rebounded off the main hank of the band and the Ricochet cut it again! Travel distance?--3 feet--That 440v steel can really take a strop!

Let's see now.
The Military sliced it neatly and it traveled a good 3-4 ft.

The Sebenza made mince meat of the rubber band and the pieces flew all around the room.(at least 4 seperate pieces)

Others to be tested later.

Uh-oh! I was just trying out this test with the knives I brought to work today…I was leaning back in my chair with my Carnivore held at arms length with the rubber band fully extended when my boss came by the cubicle for a "visit". Now I got some splainin’ to do…

I tried this test a while ago, with my AFCK. Clean cut.

Unfortunately, the rubber band hit my sister who was passing by, and is (up to now) giving me that evil glare that says "if looks could kill, you'd be dead." ... lol...

Dan

PS. Actually, I aimed at my sis, thinking about the fact that if the knife is really sharp, it'll cut clean through, and maintain the direction of travel without deflecting it during the cutting process.

I was right... hehehehe...

YES!!! Cold Steel XL Tanto Voyager does it again! From dining room to kitchen sink. Appx. 20'. I wasn't using very good rubber bands though... but then again, I wasn't stretching them a foot either. I'll have to get the wide ones like you guys are using. I also can't wait 'til I get my Native and 710 from TOT! YAAAAAY!

You can vary this test -
Use it like a pistols "trigger pull" measure:

1. Take the rubber band and strech it between two posts.
2. Place a ruler under the band between the posts.
3. Holding the knife carefully - place the edge of the blade against the middle of the band.
4. Using the edge - strech the band untill the knife cuts it.

The distance the band is streched will give you a comparitive gauge. Kinda like Balisitc Gel tests on ammo... Its only good for compairisons between to brands of ammo - or in this case - two (or more) knives.
Lots of variables - so to multiple tests to get the averages.

Just an idea.

I mean, if I went around saying I was an Emperor because some
moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, people would put me away!

I wonder if blade thickness is a factor? My only knife that has "failed" the test is a DH Russell #1, which has a very thick blade. This knife will shave arm hair with little effort.Anyone else experience this?
