Hi all,

Great forum! Saw something in the EKI website about rubber

training knives. Anybody have any info on this? Thanks.

Grinder.

Dont think they make rubber ones, however they do make 3 traning knives. All the same but without a sharp blade. Look under the new product info on the emerson page they are hiding below the shirts.

Got to play with them, very realistic and think I need to get one of the commanders to train with.

They tried making a rubber knife once, but Derek was messing with it out in the parking lot and dropped it.

The danged thing bounced a couple of blocks south, then a westbound Freightliner on Sepulveda smacked it a good one and the last thing anyone saw of it, it was headed out to sea!

After that, they decided to stick to metal trainers.

As part of an upcoming martial arts camp, I'll be taking a knife workshop that will focus on using the knife in a form, striking set and some street applications. Rather than use the steel training blanks that the head martial arts guy created (Paul Mills of AKKI kenpo), I'd like to use my Emerson SpecWar B for the workshop.

My question is: Can I convert this to a SAFE training knife? I've heard of taping the blade to taping cardboard over the blade. Any opinions?

I looked at the Emerson training knives and just don't want to spend the money right now; and also they don't have one with my blade & handle configuration.

Webhak, from what I've seen in other discussions on this subject, the tape and/or cardboard would be too "iffy" a setup when used with other folks' flesh.

For some manipulation drills involving no contact, it may suffice, as long as it's YOUR flesh!

I went to the training knives area and was disappointed to see no Mini Commander trainer...:(

I might like to see Emerson offer training blades for purchase and installation on actual knife bodies...but would these require fitting at the factory? And what about confusing trainers with live blades, since there would be no red handles?

Maybe red "training ID" clips for installation with the training blades??

Just thinking...

Karl,

I agree with the concerns of taping the knife for drills on someone else's flesh. I wouldn't be comfortable doing that either. Even with training blanks, it still can hurt if you have an overzealous training partner.

Hopefully, someone might have a solution out there.

John

Maybe you can remove the blade, trace the shape on dense rubber the same thickness of the blade, cut it out, and use it as a practice blade.
