Anybody ever heard of rubber sheaths? I got a couple of old bicylcle tyre ineretubes that look like they have real potential.
so can you sew rubber like leather, or will glue work? :D:confused:

you will need a puncture repair kit...

and you might get tired from re-inflating it. ;)

There might be a rubber product that would work, but the last time I held an inner tube in my hands (long time ago) it didn't seem cut resistent enough. I remember when car tires had inner tubes. They made decent slingshot rubber bands.

It could work, but you'd want a leather or kydex (or similar semi hard material) sleeve. Rubber has a huge coefficient of friction, it'll make drawing and sheathing hard.

 That could work. Also, a lot of people slide a section of inner tube over the outside of their plastic/kydex/leather sheaths - to act as a strap to hold things, to stop rattling etc. Can't imagine inner tube on it's own working well.

I have a belt made from resewn recycled bicycle inner tubes. It works well and is obviously machine stitched. It is kind of sticky in terms of sliding a knife past it though, unless it is wet or you dump talc in your sheath. You may want to consider instead using a tire from a racing bike. The inside of skinny road tires is often slippy nylon or Kevlar cords. It is stiff yet quite thin depending on the quality of the tire. Next time you see one of those terribly healthy Lycra clad aerobic machines ask him if he has any spare tires at home or check a bike shop that deals with road bikes mostly and ask the mechanic. They are typically just tossed and you will be doing them a favor. I sometimes still use the older style tires that are glued to the rims, called sew-ups or tubular tires. They still seem to be the most supple.

Rubber sheaths?

I hate the damn things...most of the time I'm trying to roll em on when they're inside out...and when I do get em on I can't feel a damn thing anyway.

yeah sorry I meant some sort of crappy looking liner on the inside, if you get really thin gauge sheet metal it can be bent into a rather form fitting sheath, looks like crap though so it needs to be covered

or look at this

About 25 years ago I had a dive knife with a rubber sheath. I can't for the life of me remember who the maker was (it wasn't custom), nor can I remember what happened to the knife.

Anyway, it had a rubber body with an aluminum liner, with 2 rubber straps to attach the knife to your lower leg.

If you are looking for an el cheapo knife sheath, heat up some PVC pipe in boiling water until it's a little pliable, mash it flat until it cools, then use that as the liner inside the innertube.
