Rubicon Handle Questions

Going to buy a Spyderco flipper soon and am looking for some advice. Handled a Spyderco Southard and really like the flipping action. Am considering a Rubicon instead, but have not handled it. What am concerned about with the Rubicon is the apparent oval/rounded handle profile.. Does it consume more space than a flat handle does in the pocket.. or is this not noticeable? How does it sit on a flat surface / table when folded?

It consumes more space than some, less than others. Not enough to be a difference maker in my pocket. Sets relatively flat on a table. The slight "chubbiness" actually works well on this knife. It fills my hand a bit better and gives me a better grip. Yet, it is not as rounded as it appears in pictures.

I love this knife. It is extremely well made, very light, and very usable. JMO. :)

Yes, it does look very oval in the pics.. thank you for clearing that up.. appears to be one of the best (if not the best) looking knives Spyderco makes.

Very comfortable in hand, way too bulky in the pocket for me. Sold mine immediately upon receiving it. What are you used too carrying?

Carry a Sage 3/4 the most..

CRKT ripple is my 'beater'
Victorinox Climber / Trecker
Small griptillian (not very often)

Just too give you some comparisons:
Para-Military2 = 0.451"
Southard = 0.545"
Domino = 0.460"
Rubicon = 0.652"
Sage1 = 0.435"
Sage3= 0.400"
Sage4= 0.444"
Native5 = 0.430"
Caly3 = 0.350"

I have a list of almost all Spyderco thicknesses. I just didn't want to flood your thread. Let me know if you'd like me to post it.

Thank you, very helpful. How thick is the Dice and out of curiosity, overall what is the thinnest and thickest Spyderco folder?

The Dice is the same thickness as the domino .460". This list doesn't have a few new models.
I believe have the Assist is the thickest in production (.675") with the Rubicon a very close second (.652")
Thinnest is a tie with the bug & honeybee at (.197")

I love my Rubicon, but it is a thick little bugger. I find the knife is incredibly comfortable in the hand because of its proportions, but that also means it takes up a lot of room in the pocket for only a 2.75" cutting edge.

The Rubicon has no problem staying still when placed on a table. It isn't so round that it'll roll off :)

Not a problem, what was your decision?

The decision was.. fate intervened.. for now.

Love the Sages and missing from the collection was the relatively hard to find discontinued Blue Sage 3. One came up in LNIB condition on the exchange.. jumped on it. The seller was kind enough to ship here to Canada!..which 90% of the time sellers won't do.

Have ruled out the Rubicon for the reasons mentioned.. think will buy a Southard (probably) or Domino (maybe) next in a month or so.

Not a bad choice, hopefully the Rubicon won't be discontinued any time soon and you can check one out in the future. I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone from getting the Rubicon.

But it is thick.

Looks like the Vallotton at .776. Not the Assist or Rubicon. I carry the Vallotton occasionally and it WILL fill up a pocket.

I completely missed that one!! Definitely wins the thickness award by a long shot! I bet it's damn comfortable in hand though!

Wow, very cool list there! Are those all models you own and have personally measured?? Nice work. (not going to complain by any means, but missing a couple I was looking for when I saw the list)
I'm surprised the Dyad is not very thick at all for housing 2 blades...

I know it would be hard work, and also hard to standardize or decide where to measure, but a total "girth" measurement would come in very handy in comparisons.

I can't take credit for the list. I copied it a while back from a gentleman on the Spyderco forum. It needs updated with some newer models for sure.

Gotcha. Actually it was a few somewhat older models I was looking for...

Which ones?

Ah well not like this thread isnt already off track, haha...
Some I was looking for I already have and could measure myself if I got them out with some calipers.
But, looking for old Starmate compared to newer double liner Starmate and Double Bevel. And also some Wegners...
No Yojimbos on there, nor Breeden Rescue, Slysz Bowie, Domino/Dice, etc...
