Okay, I had posted this thread before, but it got deleted.

In the next few weeks, I was hoping to order the German Mountain Ranger rucksack that was discussed here a while ago. However, the reatailer is all out of them.

CheaperThanDirt.com has some, but they don't ship to Canada (where I live).

So, I am now strongly comtemplating this pack: http://www.majorsurplusnsurvival.co...Code=MSS&Product_Code=081342&Category_Code=23

I am curious what your thoughts are on this pack. Especially, does that frame look like it'll be uncomfortable?

Thanks in advance.

Anytime you're lugging around Leather and Canvas, your pack is gonna weigh much more than it has to, meaning you'll get to carry less, with more fatigue.

Try something of more modern design and material.

There are a lot of packs out there that'll do the same job as the German rucksack and that weigh less than the 2# weight of the pack.

I found another site that carries the German ruck if you are sure you want to buy it, they have a fairly good price on it. I didn't check to see if they had any in stock though.

Hmm, they don't ship out of the U.S. either. I'll have to keep looking. Thanks for the info!

I've had one of these for two or three years now. It's only slightly heavier than a medium ALICE pack, without a frame, and the volume is about the same. The canvas it's made out of is at least as good. The external frame is very comfortable (I have many different packs) as long as you keep the wieght to 25-30 lbs. A big drawback is that there are no external pockets. At 2 for $8.00 it's as good a bargin as I've seen on the internet. Use one as a vehicle BOB and the other for knocking around with.

I think there are plenty of alternatives to the German pack but, in a general sense, if you get a Jansport for example, it is not made nearly as rugged, or durable. When you consider the price the German pack stands out. Military grade equipment has to be able to hack it and, yes, it is heavier.

I bought one of these packs on the recommendation of Longbow. I do not regret it at all. I have several packs; a Jansport "Big Student," A Kelty Redwing; A medium sized Alice Pack and a Eagle Industries A-III. The German pack compares well and is better than some.

For a day pack or for use in the trunk of a car for emergencies you could do much worse.

I like the German Pack very much as you can see someone intelligent constructed it. The two external pockets are of a good size, and sewn on only at the sides so behind them is a "tunnel" to stick through a ski, poles or whatever. The main straps can be elongated to pack a rolled insulation mat underneath (if you do not use the thin foldable insulation mats that fit into the interior pocket inside the ruck). The flaps inner side is lined with a strange liner that keeps the interior dry (beware of even cheaper "new" imitates that do have a flap that is not lined - and will let rain pass into the main compartment). Best ruck for that price I ever had, used it during service (not military) to carry gear, on the campus to carry books etc and still grab it to go shopping, swimming, to the sauna and for hiking - still the same rucksack after 15 years...

Andreas, I agree 100% with your evaluation. It's a very good and versatile pack for the money spent. Holds a lot of gear for the seemingly small dimensions too.

SportsMans Guide ships to Canada.
Trust me.
Read there shiping policy. No international shiping, Canada add $10 to shiping.
I have ordered from the SportsMans guide, and was happy with my results.
I have an order put in with Major Surplus, but since it wont be here (Alberta) till aprox Wednesday, I have no coment on them.
