What do you guys think is a good fixed blade knife that can stand up to the elements, and abuse. Also one that isn't over $200. I was looking at the SOG Seal 2000 but I saw the type of steel they were using and was dissapointed. What do you guys recommend, it will be a knife used for hiking and outdoor application.

I was looking for a similar type knife, but was on a lower budget. I picked up the Cold Steel Recon Tanto, and I'm very happy with it!

However, with a larger budget, you should check out Swamp Rat Knife Works! I think the Battle Rat (or Camp Tramp) would fit the bill nicely!

As above.

Newt's knives are semi-custom and very good value. I would go for the Recon Scout or SRK from Cold Steel as opposed to the Recon Tanto personally. The Becker range is a good knife at a good price. Good and practical, but I find the handle too large. Fallkniven are well worth a look. Overall I would go for the Swamp Rat though.

Kallisti.

Mate, I can think of just two that are working guy affordable
and tough as they come.

One is the Buck Nighthawk a favorite tough S.O. B. of a knife
if ever there was one. Mine gets the crap used out of it for stuff
that no knife should be asked to do. I've hammered mine through
1/2" cable to steel drums to cleaning deer. Sure the edge gets beat up
but a little file work and it's back to work.

The other knife is the Becker C/U 7 made for military duty. Not quite as
tough but getting awful close.

Dude, for two hundred bucks buy yourself a machette and gerber (Or similar) multitool. That's all you need for hiking. Take the left over money and buy yourself a SOG and a K-BAR, then take the left over money and take your girl out to eat!

I have a few SOG knives (Tigershark, Seal 2000, Seal Pup) made out of AUS-6, and I can tell you from experience that there is NO reason to be disappointed with the AUS-6 steel that SOG uses. It's tough, very corrosion resistant, and sharpens easily. DON'T pass up an excellent knife just because it isn't made out of one of the new "super-steels".

For two hundred bucks you can get the new Busse Badger Attack 3. It is top quality and indestructable. It is also one of the few production knives that will hold its value. Do a search on it at the BusseCombat forum here.

There have been excellent suggestions so far. I'll have to add Cold Steel www.coldsteel.com and Ka-Bar www.kabar.com .
Ka-Bar is making some really good knives in D-2 these days. D-2 is my favorite using steel for blades. It holds a really great edge and is semi-stainless. This steel holds an edge tenaciously and is awesome in everyday use for me.

Cold Steel uses Carbon V in many of their knives. This is a straight Carbon steel but holds it's edge really well also. Has a good deal of toughness too. Not the VERY BEST steel, but is up there in that area in my experience. The prices on models like the SRK, Master Hunter, Recon Tanto and such are really reasonable too.

Becker Knife and tool has great knives too! I have several models and they are a joy to use. I would suggest trying a BK&T Magnum Camp if you can. This knife is a real jack-of-all-trades.

Best of luck in your search!

All the best,
Mike U.

edited to add the plug for BK&T

Hey Vulture,
I just got a great rugged beast of a fixed blade for $170.00 form Mineral Mountain Hatchet Works. I got the White River Bowie, it came with a great kydex sheath, and a pretty good edge. I got the edge scary sharp with 5 minutes on the spyderco tri- angle sharpmaker. The link to MM is www.plan-a.org/mmhw .

Stay Sharp!

Granted my Seal 2000 does not have "uber-steel" but I find it performs quite well. Others to consider would be Fallkniven, Cold Steel, Becker and Swamp Rat.
Good luck with your search.

You could always get an HI khukuri. They will stand up to it as long as you do. Some of them are full 1/2" thick at the spine and they are all forged and zone hardened and backed by a lifetime warranty.
