Can anyone give me a suggestion on a steel/handle for a sheath knife(bought prepared) with aprox. a 8-10" blade that will be expected to keep a good edge, and take the abuse of chopping and prying(prying-only in a pinch)--it will mainly a wilderness survival knife and will be expected to perform in a sticky situation. I was considering the COLD-STEEL SRK, and consdered a Gurka to be somewhat bulky and unpractical for some more mundane camping aplications.Anyone have any experience with COLD-STEEL's seconds?

Cold steel's seconds are comsetic defects only, and if you recieved one otherwise, it would be enough reason to return it. That said, I've heard folks say you can better their second prices and get a first by looking around enough.

Will you be carrying a hatchet? or will you expect your knife to fill that roll? If you do, you will need a knife with more heft. Decide what you want this knife to do most efficiently. Then add your other uses, and pick a blade style.

Check out the cold steel trail master. It will take and hold an edge well and has plenty of heft and reach for chopping. I carred one for years and was always happy with the way it preformed and carred.

I have had my CS SRK for about 4 months now and love it. The only problem is the sheath.

Have you considered a REAL Khukuri from Himilayan Imports? The 12"AK or Sirupati would be more than able to handle anything that camping could throw at it. The quality is excellent, and all HI's knives carry an unconditional lifetime warranty! Uncle Bill will take care of you, and there is not a better knife for chopping than a Khuk!

Nothing soothes the nerves like a sharp knife in hand...

I don't know what your price range is, but one thing you might consider is getting a maker to give you an estimate on a custom. Maybe something in D2 steel, with titanium slabs for the handle handle. Somehting simple that wouldn't be to pricey, and would be a workhorse of a knife. That way you could get it made to your own design or at least one that you choose, and have more choices on how its carried if you get a custom sheath too. Worth looking into anyway.

Fix it right the first time, use Baling Wire !

At first you said that you were looking for a knife with an 8-10in blade and then you mentioned the SRK which has a 6in blade, so I'm not sure which one you are looking for. But, here are a couple suggestions. You could look Fallkniven's A1 which has a 6 3/8in blade (about). For large knives you could look at the re-introduced Becker knives . The Brute has a 9 1/2in blade. Other large knives include the Busse Basic 9, or Livesay's RTAK. There are alot of posts on these knives so you can use the search feature. Also check out: www.physics.mun.ca:80/~sstamp/knives/reviews.html http://apollo.netsrevers.com/~randall/knives/htm
They contain reviews on all of these knives (including the SRK) except the Becker. Good luck on finding a knife.

Hoodoo

The low, hoarse purr of the whirling stone—the light-press’d blade,
Diffusing, dropping, sideways-darting, in tiny showers of gold,
Sparkles from the wheel.

I have a Buckmaster that I love. It's mean looking and stong as hell. The weight is nice too(I like em heavy). Screw in the points, and it won't slip out of your hands. I've had it for a while(I got the original version when it came out) and I've never had a probllem with it. Just one word of advice, don'g go with the velco pouch that buck sells, with that you can only fit one, hig or low. I got a pair custom made for my sheath that ran me $10. Now I have 2 pouches on mine.

Hope this helps, email me if you have any questions.
