Ruike Fang vs Civivi Baklash?

Civivi really knocked it out of the park with some of their designs last year. I have the Courser and the Naja and both are excellent for what they are. I've looked at the Baklash but never bought it because of the silly blue liners. I keep coming back to it though... There's something about the shape that appeals to me. I don't have any knives like it. I'm starting to think that I could live with the light tan and in the worst case, maybe dye the scales navy blue if I end up hating it.

Then I got to thinking about the Ruike Fang. Here is another knife that's attractive, ergonomic, and has just enough similarity that it might scratch the itch. I had originally passed on this knife due to the goofy clip but I've heard that it can be swapped out for the more traditional loop-over clip on their Hussar.

I was curious to hear from people who have experience with these knives. Any thoughts?

I believe that the backlash would scratch that itch a lot better than the fang. The fit and finish on my civivi is top notch for $42 and I hear that ruike is a little more hit and miss in that department. Not to mention all the numbers and billboarding on the blade compared to the backlash's clean blade. I say go for the backlash 100%.

Sandvick vs 9cr18mov. The decision makes itself.
The 9cr18mov on my Baklash holds an edge just as well if not better than the three knives I’ve owned in Sandvik steel.

9cr18mov is very similar to 440C. It should hold an edge slightly longer than the Sandvik steel but is slightly harder to sharpen. Both knives are excellent EDC choices with blade steel that will perform about the same.

Pick the one that appeals to you the most.

The quality of the steel isnt even a matter of debate. Dont let your civivi fanboying make you look silly by making ridiculous claims.

Go pick a childish fight with someone else. Good day!

Cedric and Ada's testing on Civivi's 9Cr and Ruike's 14C28N suggest they're pretty much identical performers. They also had some terrible Sandvik results (Mora Garberg), so YMMV.

Lol @ 'pretty much'

The Civivi Praxis and the Ruike P852 had the exact same score with their factory edges. The P801SB lasted 15 cuts with a Tormek edge, and 215 after it was microbeveled. The Praxis cut 210 with after KME sharpening. So yeah, pretty much the same (arguably being generous by ignoring the abysmal 15 score for Sandvik).

I didn't realize people had such strong feelings about these steels. I have limited experience with both. I had an American-made Kershaw in 14C28N and it performed well in my opinion. (It was noticeably better than the 8Cr13Mov on the Chinese-made Kershaws.) I actually ended up selling it to fund the recent acquisition of another knife in 14C28N. That just happens to be the Ruike Jager.

So I have an example from each company. I have an example of each steel. Both seem impressive for their price but I can't compare them directly because they are very different kinds of knife. Both the Jager and the Naja are situational carry items so neither see normal EDC use. It could take me a year before these really have enough use to make a decision on the steel. Even then, the "on paper" and review evidence suggests that there won't be that much of a gap between them.

If I end up getting the Fang or the Baklash, that would see a lot more regular EDC use. Thanks again for the comments and please, keep them coming.

You’re comparing Sandvik 14C28N to Chinese 8Cr13Mov. 14C28N is definitely superior to 8Cr13Mov. I’ve had a few Chinese Byrd knives(by Spyderco) and Chinese Kershaws with that steel and it was less than stellar. 8Cr13Mov sharpens very easily, but doesn’t hold the edge long at all and it’s prone to rust fairly easily for a stainless steel.

The Civivi Baklash uses Chinese 9Cr18Mov which is close to 440C in quality. It sharpens easily and holds an edge for a decent amount of cutting. It also doesn’t rust as easily 8Cr13Mov. I can’t really tell the difference between 9Cr18Mov and 14C28N. Both make good all around budget steels and are considerably better than 8Cr13Mov.

It seems like people see the cr and mov in 9cr18mov and immediately get turned off before they even do their research. So the steel wouldn't be the deal breaker for me on these knives as they are very comparable. It really comes down to design and fit and finish or frankly just your personal preference. Everyone has their own specific tastes.

My New Year's Resolution was to buy no new knives in 8Cr13Mov (or worse). I've been using it for years. It is better than mystery stainless or the Pakistani gas station knives. Really though, that's the best thing I can say for it. I think I picked a good time too. The market is doing amazing things right now. Chinese companies are releasing some absolute gems in the $20-60 range using steels like D2, Acuto 440, 9Cr18Mov, and 14C28N.

I feel like some of the American companies who are making their knives in China are asleep at the wheel. I hope they wake up soon. For instance, I loved the design of the newish Ruger LCK by CRKT but it's 8Cr13Mov and they want $30 for it. Even without a resolution, how could I justify that all with these other choices available?

I'm still waiting to hear if anyone has successfully used the Hussar clip on the Fang. If there is a Ruike fan out there who has both, could you check?

The heat treatment on the civivi is better. So is the quality and qc. Both are budget knives and will cut. Cant really go wrong with either.
