Rules for makers mark

I am a hobbyist just making the odd knife now and then for personal use. However I don't know the rules or if there are rules to marking a blade.

Specifically, if marking the ricasso, should the printing be legible with the blade pointing up, or pointing down? (I hope I worded that understandably) I've seen knives marked both ways so I was wondering if one was right, or if it's purely personal preference?

Thanks for the help, and sorry for the newbie question

No rules. However some suggestions I've seen include putting your name and location on your blade. That way if someone sees one of your knives and wants one they can contact you.

I was making a makers mark a little while back and had a few dozen examples drafted and asked for opinions. In the end the overwhelming advise was to simply just use my name so that they could be easily searchable. I use my name location and steel type. I'm glad I went this way and seeing your name adds pride.

What John said.

Hold your knife in the right hand, mark ricasso on the left side with the words being able to be read and not upside down.

But you can put it anywhere if you want, no one really cares

As mentioned a clean mark is best. Over complicated ones usually don’t etch clearly.. mine is visually when my knives are held in the right hand. Some 90% of people are right handed.
