Over my many years, I've gone through a variety of drinking favorites: Scotch, bourbon, red wine (sounds like a George Thoroughgood song). In the last few years, my taste buds have gone to rum (I just like the flavor, alcoholic molasses).

Like a dummy, I went for Bacardi because it was a little more expensive and I thought better quality. Not so. Recently, I did some research on the best rums (and I'm talking dark rums) and the best ones are comparable in price or even a few dollars cheaper than Bacardi. Higher price is not always the best quality.

I think Bacardi gets by on name recognition and therefore gets away with charging a little more.

So I'll toss out three candidates for good rums, let me know what your favorites are:

Appleton's; Pusser's; Mount Gay.

Right now I'm sampling some Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum, very good, lighter than molasses rum but plenty of flavor. Mount Gay, Barbados, claims to be the oldest rum distillery since 1703.

Cheers, you pirates, Don

I've got a bottle of Pyrat(e?) XO reserve that I've been sipping on for the last little while that I really like. A few years ago I got to sample a few Top Shelf rums that sent my mind reeling. They were squarely in the arena of high-end Scotches as far as flavors and variations.

Black seal is my favorite rum, but Appleton Estate is very good, as is Flor de Cana.
Paramount 151 is far and away the best high proof rum, it's wonderful.

From Miss Lora-- Gosling's Black Seal Rum-----------yum!
:);):D

I've tried Gosling's  but haven't sampled Pyrat.

So far we have:

Gosling's Black Seal
Pyrat
Pusser's Navy Rum
Appleton Estate
Mount Gay
Flor de Cana
Paramount 151

Barbancourt Rhum... http://www.barbancourt.net/ ... one of the best.

Aah, sounds like another sugar cane rum. Unfortunately, I live in a rural area with limited liquor stores. I don't think I've seen Barbancourt.

I don't want to get snobbish about this. Rum is pirate juice :D.

The rums I don't like are the spiced rums put out by Captain Morgan, Castillo and Bacardi. But that's what I usually find in my local stores. Spiced rum seems to be a cover for harsh alcohol.

If you can get it Inner Circle an Australian Rum is a nice drop.

I drink the red dot, want to give the black dot a try but me and Overproof rum usually ends in disaster.

Thanks Oz. I see this rum was not made for me. Just for cheeky blokes, which we are not. I'd almost ask you to ship me a bottle, but it's more time and trouble than either of us want :D Cheers, Don

The chosen few, so far:

Inner Circle
Barbancourt
Gosling's Black Seal
Pyrat
Pusser's Navy Rum
Appleton Estate
Mount Gay
Flor de Cana
Paramount 151

I became hooked on Black Seal years ago on my first trip to Bermuda. Wonderful rum, and great now that its available in the States.

I've never really liked rum. I've tried various types, both straight and mixed with assorted liquids but there is something about the smell of it that just turns me off.

I guess if it was in some sort of mix that hid the smell I could probably drink it.

I used to like dark rums, Until I found out that for most of the cheap (under 40$) bottles I was getting the color only came from additives -sweateners and dyes, blahhk.

Now I like clear rums, or close to clear. I think its better on the hangovers too.

Rum has always been my favorite with whiskey as the acception. (Is "ey" scottish? I think "y" is scottish. IDK)

My favorite whiskey is McNaughtan's. It is really cheap and tasty. $10-12 a bottle!

Interesting. I've always thought just the opposite, I generally stay away from white liquors, unless they are vodka, gin, or Evercleer (and I really try to stay away from that :D) I go for dark beers and dark liquors and those I want on ice only, no mixers.

Thanks for your input Blackfeetmageet (I'll bet there's a story behind that name )

Edit: I find in my advanced years that it isn't worth it to try to nickel-and-dime on booze, just to save a few bucks. If I'm going to continue to blister my gizzard, it's going to be on quality stuff.

I forgot to mention a truly outstanding rum, Zapaca Centenario. 23 years old and wonderful.
Unfortunately, it's not sold in Oklahoma and I don't get to Guatemala much.

I personally like Mount gay Extra Old and Cruzan aged Select (not sure if its the correct name). I also like Captain Morgan private stock. Pyrate is ok, just personally find it a bit sugary.

The Cruzan rums from St. Croix are pretty good. Lots of fun to go through the factory too.--KV

While scotch is my favorite, rum comes in as my other favorite. I enjoy getting a bottle of Havanna Club cuban rum, and mix with orange juice.

I have been drinking nearly nothing but rum (alcohol wise, not generally:p) for quite a while now.

The ones that I seem to keep going back to are:

Mount gay eclips and extra old, always a good choice.
Appletons is also good but not quite on par with Mount gay untill you spend a bit more for the older stuff.
Hava club 3 is a great general drinking rum and the 7 is good for a bit of extra flavour.
Matusalem is also worth a look, the "gran reserva" 15 is a nice one.
Barbancourt is one of the good ones, it nearly smells like cocoa to me.
Pyrat rum is great too, the "pistol" rum is one of my faves because it comes in the cool wee bottles but the XO reserve is also a nice easy drinker.
The "plantation" rums are are also right up there with the best IMO, the Jamaican and the Trinidad ones are my favorites of the range.
Ron Los Valientes is another great rum, the 15 and 20 year olds are really good.
Clements is another good rum but is a bit over priced IMO, still good though.
Angostura is yet another great rum, the 1834 is top quality but the 1919 is a nice vanilla-y rum thats always goes down easy.

There is many more good rums out there, those are the ones I have enjoyed the most, but....

The rum of rums for me just now has got to be the "sea wynde pot still" that rum is nearly too good.

:)

Oh man, he found the Appletons...

The first time I saw it I was in Ecuador, the Appletons was way cheaper than the Bacardi, I being the frugal drunk bought the cheaper Appletons, after that night I never touched Bacardi again, why pay more for less?!

I think by the end of our three month trip there we had a 2'x3' table full of empties.
