Good morning guys. In the past couple of months, I've seen a couple of quick rumors floating around about a new blade steel for the Umnumzaan and possibly Sebenza in the near future. Now with the Nyala out with a S35VN blade, what is the current scuttlebutt about any blade changes?

My motive is based on whether or not to look at a 'zaan now or wait a few months.

Thanks all.

go ahead and get an umnumzaan now; if you wait you'll just kick yourself.

get the s30v now, and the s35vn later. s30v will go up in price over time as they become rarer and rarer. In the meantime, enjoy your umnumzaan.

Buy now and don't hold yur breath....if you want a S35VN Zaan it will lighten yur pocket over 2K.

I dont think chris will ring out the new steel in their current line till they upgrade or change their line. It doesnt make sense for them to economically. If they switch, many of their retailers will be stuck with the blades in the old steel, which is totally great stuff anyways. Don't change things that aint broke unless there is no harm

I'll agree with this, but one thing to consider is CR's history of changing blade steel in his Seb's.

ATS-34 1989-1996 = 7 years
BG42 1996-2002 = 6 years
S30V 2002-2010+ = 8 years and running

I don't have any problems with S30V, but to remain on the leading edge competitively, you gotta look to the future or you'll get passed up. I'm still on the fence with the AGR Acies, but it does have some more modern features like blade steel to its credit. When you are the King of the Mountain, everyone's looking to knock you off.

With regard to the "when to purchase" question. A wise man once told me that you can spend your whole life waiting for the next big thing. I think that makes sense here too. Thanks everyone.

Will the S30V versions really go up in value after the S35VN becomes standard? The BG42 knives are highly sought now but I feel like a lot more S30V have been made than there were of the BG42. Right?

Moreover, there are some arguably objective, performance-related reasons that people still seek the BG-42 blades. I could be wrong (easily - often am), but I don't see those factors kicking in to bump the price of the S30V knives unless CRK does something like start using aluminum instead of titanium  or something equally improbable.

I agree with this ^^^. I'm convinced that metallurgy innovations are ahead of my practical needs (though not my desires). I have no problem with S30V as currently offered and wouldn't dream of replacing the S30V knives just because there's a newer (or older) alternative. I have one BG-42 Seb - great knife, great blade, but not worth replacing the S30V blades. Same would be true if CRK started running blades off in S90V or ZDP-189 (I know, production/location issue on that) or CMP-M4. I'd buy one (or more), probably, but you get the point...

well, if the ummie is made with s30v for only 2 years, it will do something to the price in 10 years I guess. It's only been in production a very short time, unlike the sebenza's, as shown in this thread the shortest production time for 1 specific kind of steel was 6 years.

For what it's worth I received this reply from Heather two days ago when I inquired about S35VN being used in folders.

Bob,
We have no immediate plans to begin using S35VN on our folders, but who knows what the future will bring. I really don’t like to speculate. Sorry I don’t have more information for you on that subject.

Personally, i don't think CRK has any competition....i think the AGR knife is an attempt at a piece of the pie at best....time will tell.

CRK is the leader and there record has proven it...i have a few expensive "super steel" knives....BG42, S30V work just fine for my daily use and i'm pritty sure i can get thru life just fine with them...super steels does make for good forum talk though :D
