Running Dog Knives

Michael and Dell make some great working fixed blades at great prices. Their sheaths are equally as funtional, too. I don't think you'd be disappointed...

Second what Tom said. Running Dog makes really great little fixed blades for the $. I have five of them.

The "asymetrical" grind looks like a chisel ground which I hate because I can't cut straight with it. But the asymetrical has an edge bevel right on the flat side and makes a big difference.

Do a search on Running Dog, you won't find any negatives.

I have on loan from a friend a small tanto from Running Dog knives. The amount of knife that you are getting for the price is retarded. The cord wrap is solid and creates a secure handle even though it is only a three finger grip. All the edges are rounded, showing a great attention to detail, and improves functionality by making the knife very comfortable to use, especially when exerting pressure on the spine.

It cuts very well NIB. The blade is about 0.02" behind the edge which is ground at about 14-16 degrees. It is not outclassed in cutting by the custom D2 blade I have from Mel Sorg, and that is rare for a blade to do NIB without me having to rework the edge.

The steel (15n20) sharpens grinds very easily with an even feel across the stone. The kydex sheath is well formed and holds the knife securely with no rattle.

I am hoping to get some more work done with it this week. Mainly more cutting on various materials, having a look at aggression as well as general cutting ability and edge retention. No heavy durability work will be done as its not mine. But the blade feels very soild, and the steel is similar to L6 so I can't imagine many problems in that area.

Anyway I am very impressed with it so far and am definately considering getting something from him. One thing that is top on my mind right now is a machete class blade out of 15n20 with a cord wrap grip. I would be real curious to see how the chisel grind with a dual edge would perform on say a 14" blade ground out of maybe 3/16" stock.

Running Dog is an excellent knife company and everything everyone has said here is right on. I had the opportunity to test one oftheir early knives ( a lIttle pup), then I received a Little Camper about 6 months or so later. They definitely take user input into consideration, and the knives and sheaths hey better and better all the time. You get an awful lot of knife for the price, and everything is done skillfully and professionally. You can't go wrong!

I have the running dog "Maverick" (used to be the Gambler) that I got about a year ago. The concealex sheath is outstanding, and came with both a belt clip, and a cord for neck wear.

Mine is 1084 steel. This is a great knife, my favorite utility knife. It is the only non scandinavian knife I have that passes my polypropelene rope test (cuts thru 3/8 with one pass). Very good geometry for slicing (rope, cardboard, etc.). The 1084 is very tough and easy to sharpen. I really like the asymmetric grind (chisel with edge bevel on both sides), and I have no problems cutting straight lines with it. The black moly coat is thick, and evenly applied. The cord wrap is very well done, and provides a great grip, even when wet or oily. I've beat the heck outta mine and it just keeps going. I think Rob Simonich does his heat treats, so you can't go wrong there.

I guess my best praise would be to say that I'm ordering another Maverick, this time in BG-42 (so I can have a "stainless" util knife too)
