A student in a rural Texas High School has been suspended for threatening another student with a pocket knife. Some parents were outraged to learn that the school did not prohibit students from carrying knives.

The school had no regulations beyond state law which has a 5.5" limit.

The Principal said many students used their pocket knives in agriculture classes.

The student suspended was a special ed student. Hope they don't change the rules now.

State law does not prohibit knives in schools, only the knives it lists as "illegal knives".

Zero tolerance policies are a bad idea. They exist primarily to prevent small-minded administrators from being held accountable for their pernicious, harmful, or illegal actions. Something that should not be allowed to happen. There are no Texas school districts with enough brains for a "zero tolerance" policy. And neither should there be any such policy allowed.

Do you really think that some pinhead down at the local school district has the brains, authority, or any business determining the definition of "weapon" for the rest of society? I sure as hell don't.
