Hey Buck-a-roos,
I'm new to the site. Great site. I got bit by the Buck bug. Love the knives. I have a Sirus Tattoo and a Rush with a 514CM blade. Also thinking about getting a Sirus with the black blade and scales.
Got a couple of questions. I'm getting a Rush with silver inserts and was wondering if anyone knows anything about this knife? What is the silver metal? When was the knife made?
What is the diff between ATS34 and 514CM. I notice the Sirus and Rush are available in both.
Also, what about sharpening? What is the best? What about the Buck diamond sharpening stick or rod. I've thought about getting one.
Any info about the knives would be appreciated.

Griffster, I wish I could help... But some one will, I'm sure real soon... Welcome to the Buck Forum...

514cm, I have never heard of. If you meant 154cm, ATS34 and 154cm are different names for the same steel. According to the link below, ATS34 is Hitachi's proprietary name for the steel.

I do not know know much about your specific knives, but I sharpen mine using diamond stones, a coarse for re profiling the main bevel and setting the relief, and then a fine for the micro-bevel.

I searched back through the Buck catalogs to 2003 and so far havent found where the Rush with the silver inserts was listed, so I can't help you with that. I have seen them on Ebay quite a bit.

Yes Scotty, I did mean 154cm. Sorry. Thanks for the info and the link.
Plumber, thanks for looking thru the catalogs. I did get my Rush off Ebay. I'll probably receive it this next week. It looks really neat and I like silver. Would like to know about it though. I know it has a 420HC blade and is gunmetal gray. I got it for $35 plus shipping. Thought that was a pretty goo deal. I have a Rush with a 154cm blade that I sent a SOG Flash II back and exchanged the Rush for.
I'm also assuming that 154cm or ATS34 are worth the extra cost over the 420HC blades.
Also, anyone know the diff between the Sirus and the Tempest and Rush and the Impulse knives. I'm thinking of getting one or two of each but I'm affraid I won't be able to make up my mind on which one to carry.

As mentioned, these are the same alloy
154CM is produced by Crucible Metals.
ATS-34 is produced by Hitachi.
There is also 14-4CrMo made by Latrobe steel. Same alloy again.

There is also CPM 154, this is almost the same alloy produced by Crucible using a particle metallurgy process. I've never tried any, but folks whose posts I trust report that it is superior to any of the others.

154CM, ATS-34, and 14-4CrMo require special processing on the part of the steel maker.
For a while in ~80s Crucible was having problems with their version. In the '90s Hitachi was having problems with their version. Today both makers have conquered their production issues and both are good. Latrobe does a good job with their version, as well.

154CM, ATS-34, and 14-4CrMo are my favorite stainless alloys. They take a very fine edge without overly fancy sharpening equipment and they hold that edge a goodly long time. Better than 440C.

These alloys sharpen well on ceramic stones. Like all alloys, they also respond well to diamond. You might try doing a bit of reading on the Maintenance and Tinkering Forum for ideas on sharpener ideas. The Spyderco Sharpmaker is well thought of. Just make sure the edge angle matches one of the set Sharpmaker angles before you progress to the finer stones.

"I'm also assuming that 154cm or ATS34 are worth the extra cost over the 420HC blades."

For me and the limited use that any of my knives get, the fancy steel would be more for "bragging rights" that anything. The standard steel holds up quite well opening the mail and the packages I get in the mail.

I'll probably get flamed for that, but having said it, I'll usually go for the better steel just to give myself that warm fuzzy feeling of having something just a tad better than ordinary whether I really need it or not

I don't have the Impulse, but I do have a couple of each of the Sirus, Tempest and Rush. Of them all, the Rush is my favorite to carry. It's smaller and doesn't cramp my pocket space as much as the others do. Plus, I really like the blade design of the Rush the best.

Without seeing a picture of the Rush, I am not certain which knife it is. But, we did some build outs on the Rush using black handles and clear annodized handle inserts so they look silver. We did these last year ('08).

The end of the knife box has 0290B0-B, CAT8634 on it. Manufacture date 09-04-08. It's black with silver inserts which I assume are aluminium. It's a nice looking knife. Real classy looking. You guys make great knives.

We made 50 of those as a build out. The inserts are clear anodized Aluminium. We made 50 each in 4 different colors of inserts. I'll look it up and post what colors we did.

Here's a couple of Rush sales samples that I don't believe ever made it to the production line.

Sure those aren't Lightnings? They don't look like my Rush at all.

I didn't realize that I was getting such a collector's knife. I bought it because it looked pretty cool. With only 50 made I guess I'll put it back and not use it as an EDC.
