Greetings all,
Here is a pair that recently arrived from Russ, via Coop, courtesy of Les.
The hunter came first - I spotted the name "Andrews" on Les' list of incoming blades and got on the blower right quick.
The bowie is Russ' Hawthorne model - which we have seen before with blades in the 6 1/2" to 7 1/2" range. This is the big boy of that design. Having been lurking in the vicinity at the Chicago show when maker and dealer were chatting, I heard about the order for the full size Hawthorne and asked asked Les to mark that "sold" as soon as he got it in.
I had Russ to hang onto the hunter until the bowie was done - and I'm glad that I did. It gave us a chance to explore something a little different in matched sheaths and I am very pleased with how the light deerskin inlays under dark leather turned out.
Specs are as follows:
Bowie - 10" blade of forged W2 with an active but subtle hamon. Hand rubbed to 1500 grit. Overall length of 15". Ironwood handle with stainless steel double-guard and ferrule.
Hunter - 4 1/2" blade fo forged W2, hand rubbed to 800 grit (which, when done as perfectly as Russ does it, looks darned near as fine as the bowie). Overall length 9 1/2". Ironwood handle with stainless steel single guard.
Okay, enough chatter - on to the pics.
The knives as a pair:
A better look at the sheaths:
The whispy hamon:
And a single shot of the bowie:
My thanks to Russ, Coop and Les - always a pleasure to work with consummate professionals.
Roger
