Over the next couple of months, Russ will be making me a knife. I will be posting photos of the progression. The first photo is of a sketch of the knife. The second is of the L-6 round bar on the treadle hammer. The third is is the beginning of forging the tang. The knife will be a 12" spear point with fullers, pattern welded guard and fittings and mammoth ivory handle. The sheath will have a silver throat and tip.

This will be very cool.:cool:
Thanks! for the photos Keith.

Sounds like an outstanding project Keith. A different style than I have seen from Russ in the past - variety is a good thing. I know we will enjoy watching this unfold and that you will be one seriously happy camper when you finally get your mits on it.

Speak for yourself, Roger. I can think of a great many OTHER makers who are not as gifted(or backlogged) as Russ, that this would be a great project for.

I don't care for it at all, and will leave it at that.

Steven, sorry to see that you feel I am wasting Russ' talents on this project. Over the next few years you will see that Russ will be producing knives for me that are not what you normally see from him. I very much disagree that this project is not worthy of a maker with the talent that Russ possesses.

By the way, here is a knife from Harvey Dean that is a reproduction of a late 1700s knife that you will find a photo of in the Flayderman book - The Bowie Knife: Unsheathing an American Legend. This knife is the inspiration for the one Russ is making for me.

Keith, it's simple, I hate the originals, they are unrefined, and represent an aesthetic very much in vogue 150+ years ago, I hate the repros.

I don't get it. When I look at the Flayderman book to TRY and get it, I feel ill.

Like the man says, there is a butt for every seat. If Russ is game to try it, more power to the both of you.

Best Regards,

Steven, you are right, not everyone likes the same things. I happen to like many of the knives from the 18th and 19th centuries. Michael Price and Will & Finck are other examples of styles from long ago that really appeal to me. I also like the huge Civil War D-Guard bowies, and will eventually have someone make me one.

Very nice pics. Can't wait till it's finished

Keith,
Speaking for myself, excellent project and outstanding maker,I too saw that knife in Flayderman's book so thank you for posting Harvey Dean's version of it.The design you have on paper with the escutcheon,I like much more than the Dean, that said, there is nothing wrong with the Dean.

Different strokes for different folks.

That's going to be an awesome 12 incher, Keith. I like it.

Ahhhh. That 'ol STeven we know and love. :D  ;)

A 1965 Ford Mustang is cool. A 2006 Mustang is a repro, but has exaggerated the lines to be VERY sexy. I like it.

I am not real fond of Russ' drawn version (specifically the straight handle), but I'm certain I'll be much more impressed once completed.

I DO like a knife with pronounced fullers. It's an area of craftsmanship that will require a lot of work to pull off.

Looking forward to the process. This will be a good thread. Compliments to the two of you.

Coop

After Russ completes the knife, it will be on its way to Coop to be professionally photographed. Those photogaphs will be posted on this thread.

A Ford model A is cool, and so is a repro, but I wouldn't own either one, and anyone who thinks that Model A would be a good candidate for work by the houses of Ruf, AMG, or Pininfarina would be a lunatic. Big Daddy Roth would be another story.:D

Yunno what this design looks like? A broken sword, that had the tip reground.
Whatever.

Best Regards,

"Yunno what this design looks like? A broken sword, that had the tip reground."

STeven, that might just very well be where the original design came from.

I think Russ will do a great job with this one.

While this isn't my favorite style, I think it would be a very difficult knife to pull off and do it with the classy execution that we know Russ will employ. I have every confidence that Russ will make this knife as well as it could POSSIBLY be made.

Steven, you and I are friends, but I gotta say I think you're taking a big poo in the punch bowl of Keith's in-progress thread. Like the knife or not, a thread like this is going to be very informational and some great insight to Russ's work from start to finish. I think the peanut gallery comments could be done without... Just my not so humble opinion :D ;)

Carry on Keith and Russ!!! :D

Welcome back, Nick....:D

1. Yes, Russ will make the knife the bestest it can be.
2. I would have kept my comments to the one I made, but people kept addressing them(Keith, Coop, You). I am now officially done, and if Keith wants to start a new thread, I will stay out of it, Ok?

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Steven, I always appreciate and value your opinion. Others don't have to like the same knives that I do for their comments to be welcome in one of my threads. It is my opinion that you always give your honest opinion, without any malice. You and I have a different eye for what pleases us aesthetically (not always, but often) is all. There is nothing wrong with that.

Here is a new sketch from Russ that shows a curved and tapered handle and sharpened false edge. This is the design that I have decided to go with.

 Keith,
Like this design even more, the curved and tapered handle is very appealing and just looks just great and I love fully sharpened top clips.
Looking forward to this in progress thread of yours.
