I recently chanced upon this video of a russian bulat (wootz) knife made by Sergei Baranov. My question is thus, does anyone have any experience with this maker or the steel? The video is pretty impressive, but I'm not sure I'm prepared to believe someone managed to create such good quality wootz. Below is the link to the video and a link to his website. You will have to translate the website with google. It should be noted that Sergei Baranov lives in Zlatoust, the city famous for it's blade makers and for being the home and workplace of Pavel Anosov, the first man to rediscover true bulat (wootz) steel.

Interesting, I'd love to hear more about the maker as well, unfortunately I have no information to offer myself.

Cool, it seems that all of their knives are made from the same type of steel - I really like the smaller ones. I have dropped them an email as I could not register directly. I will try to get one of the small knives and maybe even one of the large ones too :)

A short update: I got an answer ... in Russian (landed directly in the Spam folder) :) I will try to call them tomorrow - maybe there will be someone who speaks English or German. Otherwise I will try to go on with the Russion->Google->English->Google->Russian communicaion and try not to get lost in translation :)

I will soon order one of their smaller knives. The 'Giant' is cool, but I am not sure my wife would allow me to bring one home ;) Anyhow - at this point I can only say that the bi-lingual communication with Google in the middle is no problem and I get responses usually the same day (our timezons are not far apart what probably helps). I was told that it takes about 20 days for the knife to be made once the order was commited.

I will keep you posted - if things go as planned (by me), than I should have the knife around beginning of October. At the moment I am deciding between the model R002 and R005 - I like this part of the process :)

Awesome! Congratulations on your purchase. I'm happy that the company is legit, I might pick one up myself. When you get your knife, could you tell me whether or not it has the typical dendrite wootz pattern? I couldn't find much on the internet about the Russian bulat steel.

Love that corny contemporary Russian rock n roll in the video. Cool video though.
Prices on the site aren't too bad..most of them under $200.
My favorite is the 70,000 Ru one of course...translates to about $1050 or so.

I was trying to find more information and photos of the knives by Sergei Baranov and found this LINK. There are quite a few photos and videos linked which I failed to find on youtube because, well, the description is in Russian :) Worth checking out.

Are all his knives the same cast damascus steel? I can't quite understand his website due to google's inadequate translator. I'm glad you found that website, in some of the videos you can see the dendrite pattern associated with wootz.

I have found one design that I really like - it is called R003 even though it looks differently than the same model on their webpage. Let's see whether they can make me one like this:

Hi, everyone, questions from this topic are still actual? Or no interest? I personally know Sergey and know his knives, so can answer by myself or asking him. SO... Feel free to ask.
