Is anyone familiar with the "Rust Bluing" process? I'm thinking this may be an easy way to get a durable finish on a hawk head...

..."Without question, the deep, rich luster and rust and wear resistance of cold rust bluing is unmatched. Unfortunately, it is a long, persnickety process nowadays, reserved primarily for fine double guns, but it’s equally at home on any steel firearm. The only equipment needed is a tank large enough for boiling the parts, a heat source for the tank, a carding brush (a specially designed brush with long, fine wire bristles and a price tag that will make you gasp, but it’s indispensable) and possibly a sweat box to create humidity..."

I think I'll start with a "British Belt Axe" that I purchased from Ragnar a while back. This is a cast hawk head that seems to have been painted. Here's a picture of the head before I started...

The first order of business was to take a Scotch-Brite pad (on an angle grinder) to it, which cleaned up the mold lines and imperfections on the head. Then I started sanding...and sanding...and sanding. :grumpy: I been sanding so much I swear my freakin' arm is gonna fall off!

I hope to have some more pictures tonight fellas.

Done a few knives, hawks and tools. Don't sand amigo instead bead blast. It will get all the rust out in less than 10 minutes. Then blue using the stuff from Brownells. When you get the color that you want, heat up some oil (the cooking kind works fine). Dip the Hawk head in the hot oil, wait a couple of minutes. Remove from oil and wipe. Done! I have even done a couple of guns this way and the finish is holding up great.
