Rust Developing on Acid Stonewashed Blade

I was carrying one of my knives today that is acid stonewashed and to make a long story short, it seems to be developing rust along the spine of the blade as well as the edges of the grind. Is there a safe way to remove the rust without damaging the acid stonewash or do I need to acid wash the blade again?
 
I would get some tuff cloths from sentry solutions. It should do a good job at safely removing the surface rust and prevent it from coming back. You could try flitz but you need to really watch out with it. Flitz claims they its not abrasive but it polishe the bead blast finish off of a knife of mine.

has never developed rust.

I'd use WD-40/Rem oil and a tooth brush on it for a while, that should take the rust off.
I have also used a product called bar keeps friend to remove rust off one of our carbon steel kitchen knives.

I tried with wd-40 and a toothbrush and had no luck. Thanks for the suggestion.
 
I am not sure how you acid stonewashed it, or how those vary in colors but I don't see anything that I can certainly call rust
in your photo. I would just put something with protective qualities on it and use and carry it.

If you don't like the way the acid stonewash came out try it again at a later date.

It might be something else, I've seen dried barbecue sauce stick to a blade longer than rust before when cleaning a knife. Brass bristle brushes work good for removing rust from blued steel while saving the blue job so it would probably work for this too. The metal looks like its turned gold/brass color at first but then after a wipe down it looks good as new.
 
The dark black spots are probably a form of rust, any attempt beyond a toothpick and wd-40 will probably cause more cosmetic damage than leaving it there will however. Just keep the blade oiled/protected and they should eventually wear off naturally with use.
 
Hmmm ..., maybe I missed the answer above but knowing the blade steel composition would help in answering the question.

Flitz DOES contain abrasive (Al²O³ as referenced on their MSDS). It's small particulate sized but it does contain abrasive, and works in stropping edges and polishing metal (both from an abrasive and chemical action).

There are products that you can put onto "rust" that will neutralize and turn it black, but I would choose to clean first based on what's really happening.
