Rust from Pocket

So I just got a brand new spyderco s30v mantix 2. Ive had it for probably about 3 days now with no problems. Last night I accidently fell asleep with my knife in my pocket and I woke up and there are a good bit of smallish rust spots all over one side of the knife....

Why would this of happened so quickly...and what is the best way to remove it?

I can't carry some knives because they rust just being in my pocket. This is particularly true of anything D2. I'm a bit surprised this happened on s30v though.

Yeah that's what surprised me...I mean ive been kind of sick recently, thus sweating a bit more, maybe that's it?

Ive tried wd40 and some paper towels, no luck.

very unimpressed with this steel so far...even if I WAS sweating excessively... I feel like it shouldn't rust in that amount of time

Try aluminum with water, it works for me that way!

Could you explain more please :) thanks

I don't know if it helps but, the knife also went from a smooth 1 color metallic to where it has that multi-colored look like it was corroded..

Could I have got a fake knife? It was a very reputable company..

Spyderco is the most counterfeit ed knife brand, so it is certainly possible.

Where did you get it from?

Red's Gear from Amazon. Has tens of thousands of positive feedbacks so I figured it was fine

Just because a steel is considered "stainless" does not mean it will never rust; don't set your expectations too high. S30V has a fair amount of carbon, so neglect can certainly lead to corrosion (if it is indeed a legit Manix).

Try some Tuff-Glide to coat the blade with, and make a habit of wiping it after use and occasionally reapplying Tuff-Glide. Learn about steels and their properties before you dismiss them so quickly.

As for the "rust spots": are they rust spots (brown/black dots) or is it just a slight patina (multicolored spots) like you described? Pics would be helpful. Perhaps some metal polish like Flitz could help take said spots off.

I don't know what the weather's like where you live, but in my town (hot and humid) I get rust spots on my S30V Spydies in a day or two of pocket carry. Usually a rag with a bit of oil or metal polisher is all it takes to clean them up. My old Military has a few minute parts of the blade which are slightly tarnished.

I would never expect properly heat treated s30v to rust in a pocket. I know some people have very acidic/salty sweat but thats bad. I guess I'm lucky in that regard as i can carry plain 1095 carbon for a week during texas summer time and have no rust develop. The only oil i put on them is in the joint.

I have a Bradley Alias with an s30v blade (not a fake), and the rough surfaces between the jimping on the back of the blade would get rust spots from carrying in my sweaty pocket all day at work (and I don't have highly acidic sweat).

I solved the problem by grinding off the jimping and smoothing the area out. The smooth surfaces of the blade never rusted.

The same thing happened with my Manix! I have never had issues with any other s30v blade before but most of my other s30v blades are coated.. It stopped happening when I started applying a thin coat of mineral oil (i use my knives for food prep, therefore i need something safe and non toxic) to the whole blade. It helps a whole lot but just reapply every 3 or 4 days..

Sorry for the late reply man, well if you rub aluminum foil with water on the rust spot, it will wear it away. I heard it was due to chemical reaction, but some other folks claim that the foil scratches it off. ( Be careful since it does cause small scratches, if you rub it in the same pattern as the grind lines the scratches will be hardly noticeable.)

Ive never had problems with s30v but I have a buddy who has a poor diet and is chronically dehydrated. His sweat is a knife killer, like he excretes pure acid salt. As far as the stuff that's on there Ag Russell sells this little thing called a rust eraser, I've had mine for years and it's awesome for erasing rust and is the absolute best for cleaning ceramic sharpening stones.

You should contact Spyderco with an explanation and see if you can send it in. Does not sound normal to me.
