A few threads recently reminded me that I hadn't used (or even taken out) my ASH-1 LE for a while. So, I did the natural thing and pulled it out of the sheath for a quick fondle.

Behold my surprise! It was rusty:eek::eek::eek:

Not much rust, just tiny spots, around the rear talon hole, just in front of the handles and some on the spine.

I clearly didn't clean it properly last time I used it, although there was no visible muck apart from some fingerprint grease - on the rusty areas!

I know I have alien sweat, so I really should have thought of that.

I would have taken some pictures for you guys, but before I could stop myself I had rubbed off the rust with cloth sprayed with WD-40, then I wiped it all over with a Tuf Cloth. No more rust   :D

The moral of the story is: If you have a naked user, clean it before putting away, or better yet, just keep using it!

PAM it! I had the same problem with some of my double cut blades and of course my CE ones, some delicious PAM did the trick.:barf:

hell yea! shame on those who let their steel rust!

nice story=) but i must say that you cheated with the cloth! you shall use away the rust (joke)=)

dam my blades haven't seen the wild for a looong time! dam school, occupying time like the Nazis!!!

PAM - I did a quick google. Assuming you aren't suggesting that I rub Pamela Anderson on my blade, do you mean this stuff?

If so, what flavour should I use

Tuff Glide works well too, but I wouldn't bake with it.

I think the professional stuff on the left should do!

Thats the stuff.;) I use the olive oil one.

No worries when it comes to cutting food with your knife.

I have been having problems with my double cut blades getting speckles of rust .
BARF, BME-LE

The two in question are non users so beating them is not an option. My solution was to use an anti rust agent, forgot the name... I then purchased an air tight pelican case and put some desiccant in it. Rust worries is just a thing of the past now..

So far I've been really lucky with my DC blades, despite some very hot and humid days this summer my knives remain rust free.

I do keep spare silica gel packs strewn around the area where my knives are stored tho, just in case! :p

The primary ingredient of Pam is canola oil. One of the secondary ingredients is water.

It seems to me that a high quality vegetable oil would be a better bet, though I use MPro7 gun products.

When I have had rust (nearly always because I've been slothful, and I do live near Booger Swamp), I've had good results with a judicious use of CLR, which I find in the plumbing section of Lowes. I choose my brush depending on the finish of the knife.

I've never had rust problem when I've been diligent about cleaning/oiling. I suspect that the product is less important than the diligence.

If I read a Warning label on a can of Pam that says "Don't use on knives", I'll know that someone on this forum used flavored Pam and tried to "taste" it! Probably an Auburn fan.

Vegetable oil is the wrong choice, regardless of the delivery method. It can get rancid. You really want to use mineral oil instead.

Mineral oil sounds good, I've been meaning to get a bottle for darkening some black micarta handles.

I use mineral oil. Works great. A little bit goes a long way. No rust here, even on some O-1 stored in a leather sheath for over a year.

The silica gel sachets are a good idea - I have loads that I scavenge from work. Every now and then I'll put them in the oven (electric, not gas) to dry them out.

My sentrysolutions TufCloth has never let me down, when I've remembered to use it!

Haven't had any rust problems with mine. I hope I don't. I always make a point of cleaning the knife thoroughly when I've finished using it with soapy water, then rinsing it off with straight hot water. It heats the steel up a bit and the knife dries properly. No problems!

That's at home though.;)
