Rust on a new Gransfors axe... any suggestions?

I recieved the axe in the mail and there was some rust on it. Luckily, not on the blade itself, but farther up the axe. I am not sure how to handle the removal of the rust. I know I could resort to something like electrolysis or scraping it off but I am slightly worried to do so. With electrolysis I am afraid of soaking the handle and having part of the axe out of the solution to prevent this. Any suggestions?

Also, any personal suggestions for a preserving oil for an axe would be great.

Do you have a photo of it? All the GB axes and hatchets that I have seen are for the most part left raw except for the polished bevel and edge. Because of that, in my opinion, a little surface discoloration and oxidation is to be expected and not anything to worry about unless its pitting.

If it is just on the surface like I expect, any decent metal polish and some elbow grease or a buffer should get it out.

Rip, here's a suggestion. Don't sweat the small stuff! Wipe it off with a little 0000 (that's called four ought) steel wool, then apply the protective coating of your choice. I'll bet you don't like my suggestion, though. :D Hey, this isn't rocket science. Don't over complicate your approach to the perceived problem with some high-tech solution. Good luck and enjoy your fine axe.

Give it a squirt of WD40 and use the steel wool like the good Dr. sez :D

No big deal, as stated. Rub it off with some tarnish remover or fine steel wool, and apply some good protectant like Break-Free CLP, Rem Oil, or G96. WD-40 or silicone spray will work also, I just like to use something that lasts a little longer, and I always have gun lubes laying around.

No worries,

Clay

You could always move to Az to slow down the rust.:D But others advice is the way I would go. Rub it off and coat steel with a good lube

You guys are great. I also wrote GB USA (GB Sweden e-mail correspondent is on vacation XD)
"Just use a light oil and steel wool it will come right off...

Hope this helps!
Thanks
Janice"
