Rust on a new Marttiini Lynx carbon steel blade?

Just got this little Sheila in the mail today, brand new, and it looks like it's rusty!

Before I ask for a return I thought I'd check here to make sure I'm not being an idiot. This is rust, right? Not just the finish? And not easily and completely fixable, right?

There's a shiny black finish on the other side of the blade (with the engraving) that looks like it should be there on the side with the reddish spots. Anybody else have this knife?

Cheers!

Looks like rust to me. I'd take it back. If they're nice enough to swap it make shure you open it up and examine it before you leave. This is why I prefer to put my hands on a knife before I buy it.

Return it or you could try wading up some aluminum foil then dip it in water and give it a good scrub. That should take off the surface rust without too much effort. Marttiini's are a good value IMHO and keep a keen edge. Best of all they are light weight and not expensive!

If it's rust, it doesn't look deep at all; I don't see any pitting. Should be easy to remove it by scrubbing with some mineral oil or WD-40 and some fine steel wool. Might even be able to scrub it off with a little bit of baking soda. Oil the blade a little bit, after it's clean & dry.

The blade doesn't look damaged to me. Rust is always a possibility, to some degree, on a carbon steel blade. So long as you don't let it get too far out of control, it's manageable. I wouldn't worry about this one, myself.
